Isaac and I have been compiling a list of things he needs to do while in law school to help promote him and make connections for future jobs/career help.

These are our ideas:
1) Join local bar association: Virginia Beach Bar Association
2) Join local Virginia Trial Lawyers Association
3) Join local American Inns of Court
4) Join student bar Read more... )

Don't underestimate the value of networking with fellow students. While Isaac may be most concerned right now with his prospects after law school, his classmates are the people he will continue to be in contact with throughout his career.

I'm not underestamating it. I am just saying, he will already be with his classmates all day, so I was trying to brainstorm some more professional networking ideas. Does that make sense?

Followed you over from law students . . .

What area is he going to practice in? Virginia Trial Lawyers Association may be something to look at and in a larger city, there will be a city bar as well.

If you are religious, joining a church can be a good way to establish yourself in the community without being "networky". Likewise volunteering at the local hospital.

We are religious specifically Orthodox Christian. I think he is going to go to Regent University. He thinks he may want to try to work for the ACLJ.

The majority of our families are in West Virginia, but we have no desire to live there. Its just really bankrupted there. We are really thinking about Virginia/DC area after he graduates.

Thanks for the tip on the VTLA. I emailed the Virginia Bar to see if they had a law students section or something, but they do not. We already have a church we plan to attend, its actually a Greek Orthodox Cathedral. I'm sure Isaac will do volunteering, but I don't know if he will at a hospital. Is there something that makes a hospital a better volunteer location?

Being involved with a community church is a good way to make connections with people who have a similar values system and who will want to help you out when finding jobs and "rainmaking" rather than an event where people may be suspicious of a law student looking to sell themselves ( ... )
