Nursing has a lot to recommend it, human service wise. But right now, it tends to be a REALLY high-stress occupation. If you go into it and try to find a niche in something that isn't too top-heavy with administration, like say maybe hospice care, that might fit in well with what you want.
Yes, it is a high-stress occupation, but it's in a way that I want. The three or four places I've been two were low-patient and high-report, which impressed me, but I know there are other places out there that are high-patient, high-report, high-speed, and those might drive a person nuts.
