Anyone out there?

Don't laugh at me. I'm trying to get back into reading. School has destroyed my ability to read. Looking for something preferably an easier read, maybe in the sci-fi or fantasy genre although there isn't a lot I won't read. And remember that I'm hooked by characters and not necessarily plot.

Suggestions? I'm tired and

The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor are pretty easy to jump into. It's a retelling of Alice and sometimes falls into the grimdark imperfectly crafted dystopia thing, but usually it's a lot of fun!

I second this. It isn't a difficult read at all. You could finish one book in a day, or less (depending how fast you read).

Which reminds me I've yet to purchase the last book. Not that I have any time to read. :c

OOOOH. THIS SOUNDS RIGHT UP MY ALLEY. Is it anything like the retelling of fairy tales that Gregory Maguire has done, if you've read any of his stuff?

I don't know. Um...maybe try Maggie Stiefvater's books?

Googled her, checked her out, seems like a promising lead? Thanks!

Her books aren't packed with action or drama, so don't check them out if that's what you're looking for. The thing I love most about her is that she's an artist as well as a writer, she composes her own music for her books and creates her own story trailers. She's big on Ireland and Celtic things in general and I really appreciate that as well (that's probably more of a personal thing though). Aside from all of that, she's really friendly and down-to-earth, and very funny. You can check out her LJ page if you want to. http://m-stiefvater.livejournal.com/

Have you read any of Meghan Whalen Turner's Thief/Attolia series (The Thief, The Queen of Attolia, The King of Attolia, A Conspiracy of Kings)? I highly recommend -- wonderful characters and fantastic prose. If you've never read any Georgette Heyer, you might start with The Grand Sophy (though you'll have to excuse one episode of casual anti-Semitism) or Friday's Child. I'm also fond of Hillari Bell's A Matter of Profit (high middle-grade/low YA SF). For light YA steampunk, there's Airborn by Kenneth Oppel and its two sequels whose names are currently escaping me ...

Thank you! I think I remember you posted about the Thief series before, am I right? Just having some names to go on is wonderful. It's a terrible sinking feeling to be sitting on amazon.com and realizing that you have NO IDEA where to start and it's been so long since you've bought a book for pleasure that they have no recommendations for you. (Amazon Recommends: "Mosby's Comprehensive Review of Radiography", "Pathology for the Health Professions", and "Computed Tomography for Technologists". Ouch.)
