Okay guys so I have to do a survey for my Art Ed class and it's due tomorrow. If everyone could answer these two questions as soon as possible I would be much obliged:

1.) Why teach art? (as in why should it be taught)
2.) What should be taught in art classes?

Please please help me! Thanks!

Jackie

1. "Life beats down on your soul. Art reminds you that you have one." -Stella Adler (Sorry, it's kind of a copout, but I think it's true.)

2. I suppose (and I know nothing about the field) art history, major art movements, techniques, and maybe a bit about the philosophy of aesthetics.

Hope your semester is going well so far!

1) art should be taught because its the only class where work is based on the identity of the student and not the teacher (unless you're bernick)
2)i think that depends on the grade you're teaching. second graders probably wont appreciate talking about the use of perspectives in vermeer...although high schoolers do love to fingerpaint.

1. art should be taught because it forces you to think and to feel, something other classes don't always do. people look to art for culture, and if no one's making good art, our culture will suffer. the art classroom is a kinder setting than the art world; it is a space for young artists to experiment, to fail and to grow without having to worry about comissions, shows, etc. it's a nuturing of future culture-shapers.

2. art classes should focus on not only technique, elements of design, art history, color wheel (all that good stuff), but the evaluation of art and the forming of an opinion on it. students should be taught to not be afraid of art or of criticizing it, but of its incredible importance (thus why we should avoid bad art).

good luck!

1) Because art, along with literature, music, and theater courses, are what give people the ability to make the reasons why those kids wanting to be doctor's are healing people: Because life and action can be created in the world.
2) Element's of design and technical art tips as well as art appreciation and the necessity of searching out your soul in the creation of your art.

1.)Art should be taught because its what gives your soul wings. Self-expression is paramount during adolescence, and its so rare that a student has the opportunity to learn that in a such a structured environment as a school setting. Art is the classes that opens up the world instead of compartmentalizing it.

2.)As I mentioned before, there should be an emphasis on self-expression, but at the same time, students should be given the opportunity to understand the expression of others and be able to draw a greater significance from that expression. Technique and art history should also be included, obviously.
