Robert Jordan (the author of the "Wheel of Time" series) has been diagnosed with amyloidosis. It's a very rare blood disorder involving misshappen or misfolded protiens in your body. So on a suggestion from a friend, I went down to I-Con, a SF convention in New York (specifically in Stony Brook University on Long Island). I had a wonderful time this weekend. I'm pondering buying a cell phone. It would be nice to have my own phone number and my parents have been getting annoyed at not being able to contact me when I travel around. I'm still watching Battlestar Galactica and enjoying it, though the quality of the second half of season 2 seems to have declined somewhat. I loved the continual story arc of the first half, and the second half has a lot of episodic stories which don't really connect well. I just discovered Google Earth, which was recently released for the mac. Sure we've all played the "look at a satalite view of your house" game, but this is an impressive application. Yahoo and AOL have an plan to give preferentail treatment to e-mails from companies that pay 1/4 of a cent to a penny each. This paid e-mail will bypass all spam filters that might otherwise catch normal mail, the idea seems to be that spammers couldn't afford to send paid spam ( Read more... )
