i've always thought of hack as performing another's material, doing street jokes, and talking about subjects that have been beaten to death without putting a new twist on it, and using standard punchlines. hack can be many different things.

i can tell you that i have been told when i was unknowingly using someone else's joke. and i have told other people the same. it happens. i think there are some people in the mpls community that no one thinks too highly of, and therefore won't waste the time or energy. because either they think the person won't get, or that person won't change even if they do get it.

Absolutely. I think Justin summed it up pretty well.

I would say that anyone who doesn't care about the art of comedy is a hack. Someone doing it just for a paycheck. Anyone who isn't willing to challenge the audience or themselves.

Unfortunately, hacks are usually very marketable and get booked more often than legitimate comics. (See: Human Jukebox) Bookers like Yoder make a living off of booking sad, pathetic animals like that and are seemingly hell bent on driving comedy into the cold, cold ground.

Fuck hacks. Tell 'em you hate 'em.
