Thankyou :) Yeah Sigurd IS awesome. We can't decide who's the baby Laurel so we've decided we're twins :) I don't think he's in LJ land but he does do FB. Do you? It'll be wonderful too, to have you back at Festy next year.
I have a fb account under the same pseudonym as this one, but don't really use it. I'll just have to congratulate Sigurd in person next time I see him.
I totally missed you at Festy, but I miss you and Counter_ermine all the time anyway. I'll even seriously consider coming to festy for the whole thing next year if you guys come!
Completely agree. SM fills a need for people who can't go to festival. It's not really serious competition, more a consolation prize I thought. To me it lacked "magic", but it maybe because I approached it with an attitude problem.
I think that there were more mundanities than we are used to at a camping event. We've been rather spoilt with Festival and SExpedition being in out of the way places with not much in the way of buildings, distractions etc.
There are certainly benefits of using an established site in such a convenient location such as the one Suth moot was held. And I figure it's cool if there are mudane facilities and stuff about, that really works for some people and it makes it an easy access event for newbs, families and for people who find that does not effect their medieval immersion experience. But I think we have a different eye for our SCA and the mundane stuff probably effects us more than others.
Maybe that's the "magic". Being immersed in the experience?
And I have to say, I quite enjoyed having boiling water on tap outside of the kitchen. While a gas hot water urn is not period it was a very nice treat.
See, I didn't get that magic last year, nor even in full force other years at festival anyway. Cos it's about who and where you camp, and that sort of thing. Campsites with a fridge and couch - are they really less magic breaking than some buildings? Attitudes - again it depends who you hang out with, and who is there to be hung out with.

It's been so long since I've been there it didn't even put the two together until you mentioned it. But yeah, weird.
