Aug 11, 2009 21:46

there was a time, in the not too distant past, when local music was all the shiz, and i was often found at any one of sydney's greatest indie music venues. nowadays, i flip open a drum media and stare blankly at the gig guide wondering who the hell these bands are.

so as of today, i am beginning The Great Australian Music Search. i am not ( Read more... )

Bluejuice... i always see that photo of them (the topless one) but I actually don't think I've heard their music.

I'm not really sure how to describe their music, it's a bit of rap, a bit of pop, um.. really catchy tunes.. I've seen them twice now and their shows are so full of energy, I haven't seen them in a while so am quite looking forward to their show :)

i know they are friends, but cotton's album is brilliant.
again, i've put up three songs: window man of the dark.mp3, in two eyes.mp3, and rest my head.

again, they're friends, but im a fan of the evening son (listen to "all aborad the boat to wherever" for an idea of something they've recorded in the last year - recorded by a guy named cam, who recorded that band that i can never remember the name of that are managed by julia's sister's boyf, joel). i dig em cause they're doing a sound that harps back to the early/mid 90s.. without it being 'too revivalist' or 'too familiar'. having said that, they've always had issues with translating their sound onto recordings (because of such limited cash). if you ever get the ability to see a show that they are headlining, go and see it. they will absolutely blow you away.. esp the drumming of mr sam peterson.

or for something completely different.. heartbreak club (again, friends). nerdy-rock/emo-punk/ultra-pop. just self-funded their album (40 odd grand). totally the wrong sound for an ( ... )

Normally I'd provide links, but I'm a bit rushed for time.

You've probably heard me bang on about Papa Vs Pretty. They're spectacular. If you're into power pop, Where's Jerome do some pretty great stuff. Melbourne's Deloris are coming into their own with melancholy indie-pop, a la Arcade Fire. Their last album Ten Lives, was great.

Le Kingste and Cloud Control, who Joel looks after, are both pretty great. I think you'd especially dig Le Kingste.
