There's a pretty strong undertone of bitterness and wah-wah-wah in that comment. Criticising popular fiction for being banal is like complaining that rain is wet. However, it has made me want to take another look at Moorcock's work. The stuff I read (early Elric novels) was terrible, but I hear he's improved a lot since then.

Yeah, in the interview he repeatedly mentions his annoyance at "his ideas" being "kept out of print" while lesser talents make all the dough with less "original" work. The legitimacy of his thinking there is difficult to gauge without more information, but his tone's certainly petulant ( ... )
