Maybe Gojyo gets his bad puns from Hakkai? I don't know.

Personally I liked Goku's jab about how Gojyo is so heavy, they wouldn't be able to throw him very far ;)

Recently I thought about Sanzo titles together some LJ friends too. We know that Ukoku Sanzo is the 24th, Sharak the 28th, Koumyou the 30th and Genjo Sanzo the 31st.
Is not possible that all kyoumons follow the same series of numbers because Koumyou inherited Seiten before Ukoku but he is listed the 30th while Ukoku the 24th.
So, probably, every kyoumon follows its own series of numbers. The successor of Sharak should be the 29th Arhat (for Koten kyoumon).

I get confused with the Sanzo naming conventions. I had thought, up until this chapter, that each Sanzo came after the last in the numbering: ie, that Sanzo took over from the 30th of China, who also had the Maten Sutra. (What I am trying to say badly is that I thought there had been 30 previous Sanzo's carrying the Maten). Did I get it wrong? Or is it that there have been 31 Sanzo's in total? Of course I'd probably know if I'd bothered to read Ibun, but Ibun drives me crazy in a bad way...

Puns are so hard to translate! I usually just cheat an explain it rather than try to find an English equivalent.. lol.

Well it looks like veronicacode explains it for us! (See above comment). So I think it just counts how many sanzos have succeeded each particular sutra.

Oh, wait, I mean, that's so funny -- I never knew the original pun in that scene, and while I'm not a punstress, it totally gives me a giggle that MK is harkening back to her older stuff that way.

And the female Sanzo is so cool! Argh, do I need to re-read Ibun to remember what the deal is with arhats? I wonder if anything from Ibun will tie in here, too?

It's actually kind of a funny pun, even though I generally don't like puns, lol.

I'm not sure if there was any mention of arhats in Ibun, though it would make sense if they had some, right? (I think it just refers to monks who've reached enlightenment, though I don't know much beyond that..)

Japanese seems to lend itself to punning because so many words are spelled/written the same way as others. But I don't speak the language. As a speaker of Japanese, would you agree with that assessment?

I seem to remember that Hakkai went a bit pun mad during the epic Mahjong game. The punning didn't translate in the tokyo pop version, but someone (can't remember who) did a deconstruction of the scene and explained all of his mad punning as well.
