wall of awesome

There's been a lot of less-than-awesome going around fandom recently. So here are some of the awesome things I have come across lately:

So, we all know I loved Iron Man. I also enjoy comics, but have woefully neglected my education in them. Therefore, I found A Newbie's Guide to Iron Man, Parts 1 and 2 by likeadeuce to be highly informative and musesfool's little ( Read more... )

*happybounce* Recs! Jenrecs! Yay! I will start reading on my lunch hour.

Quick thumbnail sketch of the fandom badness? I'm not in fandom (I just read the fic) but I like to know what to steer clear of.

Hee! They're kind of a weird and random set this time, but I hope you find some of it enjoyable!

zvi_likes_tv has a pretty amusing parody summary of the most recent SPN issues here. The two meta posts I linked to above are actually related, in that they are the kind of discussion a surprisingly large faction of fans (some of whom I normally think of as fairly reasonable) decided to attack the very existence of (or at least jumped on the bandwagon of one particular attack).

Bandom has been having a sort of mini-version, mostly less facepalmy from the larger social issues standpoint, but still pretty bad in the "people whining about what other people should say in their journals" direction. The bandom version is also both more trivial and less completely wacked, in that it's almost wholly centered on the expressing of opinions vs level of offensiveness/unreasonableness (with a dose of "we're talking about real people") rather than on the suppression of real discussion of issues I find important.

(I should probably note that it's quite possible that that SPN faction may, in fact, be in part responding to a set of people I haven't actually personally read who are making sufficiently simplistic and unreasonable statements that their reaction could well be somewhat understandable, and that there's almost certainly a large variation w/in that faction. Both sides are having a bit of a tendency to lump the other side together and accuse the entirety of the other side of the evils of the most extreme members, obfuscating the best and most interesting part of the discussion.)

Oh man, "Matchmaker" is ADORABLE. Also, "This One Time At Band Camp" really makes me want to get all of "Entourage" on Netflix again.

I loooooooooooove Entourage. I keep having to convince myself I don't need the box sets when they come up cheap on Amazon.

*grin* Glad you liked! I dropped Heroes partway into season 2 and I don't know if I'll end up going back to watching the show itself or not, but I still wish for fic about the season 1 characters I enjoyed.

*laugh* most of the fandoms are shows I haven't seen, or bands I don't know. but you win at awesome with the Hedge-fic!
Hedge makes me wanna be a bassist. (as does Erin McKeown. and Melissa Ferrick on "Drive." and whoever it was playing bass with Ani DiFranco that one show. and and and... one of these days, eh? *sigh*)
