"No?"

Last year - his last year - he and Ghani - his Ghani - had escaped into the desert, causing much alarm in Sietch Tabr.

"No. I called you - " and there was the dimpled grin that meant older-him and not him-him, of course, " - but it seemed a night for staying in."

"Oh, and did I complain about whatever celebrations I had to endure?" He grinned back.

"You might have, or you might not..." She smile she gave him was angelic. "But I get the impression someone might have been contemplating a midnight run, just to get out of the palace."

Irulan knocked on Ghani's door, smiling.

There was knocking, and Ghani cast a wary eye at the door. She had her suspicions, but it would be mean not to answer.

"No room service," she called, not yet opening it. "Come back later!"

Not that that would discourage the handful of people that knew where her rooms were.

Irulan chuckled, "Open the door, Ghani, I have presents!"

Ghani was going to turn to Leto in mock-horror and mouth the word 'hats' before stepping around the weetiny tree invasion to let their stepmother in.

For all her poise, maturity and grace, Ghani was still only turning twenty-four. She wasn't that much older - biologically, at least - than some of the students she teaching, and her sense of humor about teasing her family members would never get older.

Although she'd always blame that on Leto. Together, they tended to be incorrigible, especially in regards to Irulan.

"Come in then, Wife-of-our-Father," she sang, getting the door. "If you come bearing tribute, we have pizza."

Max took one last moment to examine the wrapped box in his hands. After ascertaining that it wasn't too neatly wrapped (it wouldn't do to seem too worried about appearances) he nodded to himself and extended his hand to knock on the door.

Most people would be shocked to think that he actually remembered things like birthdays... but he did.

Ghani blinked in surprise at the idea of more guests, doing a quick mental run-down of who else on the island might come knocking at her suite.

Renee and Faith weren't in town - blessed Maker, let Renee and Faith not call today with Leto here - but any of her male friends would, honestly, show up for no good reason any time.

Usually because she almost always had pizza and alcohol stashed somewhere.

"It's open," she called, reaching to grab the door and yank it open with half a slice of pizza stuffed in her mouth. "Unless you're some sort of evil Fandom creature come to ruin my Wednesday."

"Are you evil today, Max?"

Max stroked his chin with his free hand, highlighting the absence of a goatee (someone had been watching terrible science fiction shows). "It seems I am no more or less evil than I usually am." He smirked. "Is that acceptable?"

He waved the wrapped little box in his hand to draw attention to it, hoping that the promise of gifts would offset his inherent evil.

He knew her well; bribes were always accepted. Ghani was going to try and grab for the box as she laughed. "So long as you don't decided to be more-evil while my family is here," she murmured, eyes dancing with amusement. "No offering swimming lessons to my stepmother."
