Hi everyone... I'm due to have a baby in the next month and I'm having trouble deciding on a sleeping arrangement. I want to have the baby in the room with us and very close to me for at least six months, but probably much longer than that. I would really, really like to co-sleep but my husband and I are both sleepwalkers and talkers and I won't ( Read more... )

We had space issues until my son was 3 mos. We got a travel sized pack n play and just used the padded play space as his bed. He transitioned easily from side lie nursing in bed with me to sleeping there (with swaddling up) until month 5-6, then we had to get a little more stealthy about it. He still hasn't out-grown it and likely won't until we're ready to transition him to the bottom bunk of his brother's bed in about 7-8 more months.

You weren't bothered by the baby sleeping so close to the floor? Maybe I'm just worried because it's currently 20 degrees outside and my house feels drafty.

Not really, bundled up in a warm sleeper, cap, socks, plus swaddling in a micro fiber cushy blanket would totally be sufficient.

My son is 12 months and has slept with us at night all along, but we have a pack n play for naps and to start the night, and he still fits in it fine! Once he outgrew the limit for the bassinet level, I just moved the mattress to the bottom in the playpen setup. We're not playpen users, so it's always just been his bed, and he seems to like it.

I did it this way because I was sure he'd be like his sister and not like to sleep alone at all, so I figured at least it would be easy to put away if it wasn't used.. but it's wound up being the most used thing I bought. It's also nice that we can travel with it and it's exactly what he's used to.

(I left this comment for the person above me, too. :) )

A pack-n-play has legs, it's not right on the floor. It can't be more that a foot of difference from a crib mattress on the low setting. It hadn't occurred to me to worry about it!

Maybe once I set the crib up and see what the low setting looks like I'll change my mind about using the bottom of the Pack and Play... Also, once he's too large for the bassinet, it'll hopefully be warmer out. It's the drafts that worry me.

Have been doing well with our Arm's Reach Co-sleeper but to be honest we used it more when he was a newborn and we have been bedsharing more than we use it now. (Our son is almost 6 months) He is a big baby, I would guess 22 lbs, though we'll find out for sure at his dr's appointment soon. I know that has helped both my husband and me be more confident with bedsharing since he seems more... sturdy, I guess.

Since he's so huge I also recommend the Arm's reach because I would have been annoyed if I bought something that only went up to 15 or 20 lbs and couldn't use it very long with my chunky boy!

Only slightly related, neither of us sleepwalk, but my husband snores and I talk in my sleep from time to time. My husband told me this weekend he came in while the baby and I were sleeping and our son was talking in his sleep!

Haha, that's so cute! My husband has been known to try to shove me out of bed using his arms and legs... and walk around the house with a sponge and can of lysol saying, "Scrub, scrub... scrub, scrub." Where I'm more the type to get myself completely turned around so my head is where my feet should be.

So what did you think of the co-sleeper mattress?

I can see why some people complain about hardness but imo it's no worse than some crib mattresses I've seen. My complaint is it's hard to clean. It doesn't come with a sheet that fits it or anything, I'm not sure how you get one to fit it safely, so it's pretty much unvelcro the "mattress" out of it, wipe it down and hope for the best.

The Arms Reach company makes fitted sheets that fit it.

Edit: I see now that you said this in your comment further down.

Are you sleepwalking and talking while pregnant? I stopped while pregnant and haven't started again. A lifetime of night terrors, sleeptalking, sleepwalking and it just . . . stopped. Kinda crazy.

Interesting...

My husband says I talk once in a while but I've only gotten out of bed to sleepwalk once since I've been pregnant.

Hey, now that I think about it, I haven't had even one nightmare--I normally get those a lot, too. It would be really nice not to get those anymore!

Well, even if I ultimately settle down, my husband certainly hasn't. He loudly ordered me to "Get the hens ready" the other morning...

Well, if *your* sleep self settles down, you could bedshare with baby on the outside (rail, baby, you, husband). It was just a thought. :)

Just wanted to say that room sharing *is* cosleeping. You don't have to bed share to have the benefits of cosleeping.

That works for me. :)
