Web site hosts

All right, my pretties, show me how smart you are about the internets.

For years, amezri has been hosting all my fan fiction. I've cruised along, not having to worry about a damn thing. As time went by, I kind of thought that eventually I'd get all my stories up on An Archive of Our Own, but it remains in beta. I've got no idea when that will become a ( Read more... )

I have no information whatsoever on the nets, but I just thought to point out that when I went to shamelessly take your link, it does not exist. Perhaps you are mocking my freeloading by providing a fake one, but if you are perchance not doing so .... er, you should be made aware.

Worked for me just now. Wait, no, it didn't. Need to get that stupid quote mark off.

I use hostmonster which has been good for me, but I do all my own coding so I have no idea how it plays with uploaded code. It has a pretty good rep, I think. It averages to $5-6/month for a two year deal but you have to pay it all up front so it's a lot all at once.

As for AOOO, it will be in open beta very soon (code freeze in less than a month for the transition) though it will be by invitation.

Sweet news about AO3, whether I get an invite or not. I'll add hostmonster to my list of look intos - my first pass through google tossed up their name among the best rated for cheap personal sites, but I tend to prefer to get my info from my flist or circle, so I posted the question.

A3O: don't know how the invites will be distributed, and no doubt you'll have many coming your way in any case... but if I'm issued any, I'll forward one northward pronto.

I'm confident I can finagle an invite when they're available, but I'm still going to want to have a site. And not googlepages. As someone (possiblly over on DW) observed, I loathe the way they look, the underlying html, and I have consistent problems googledocs and suspect I would with their pages as well.

My domain's from GoDaddy and my hosting is from Surpass Hosting. I've had both since late 2003/early 2004, except for 1 month-ish period where I was on HostGator, who suspended my service just over 1 month, claiming I was running malicious scripts, out of a directory I could only access through FTP.

I have EFiction set up and running on my domain (just because I felt like doing it haha), so I know that definitely works. I've also set up WordPress without problems either.

Just so you know, the Archive of Our Own is scheduled to move into Open Beta in the next couple of months. At that point we'll be using invite codes, but they'll be fairly easy to get; people who don't know someone already using the Archive to give them a code can just add their email address to a list and we'll send some out periodically, on top of the codes existing users will get.

But I'll be happy to send you one of mine once they're available. :)

Lovely to know it's moving forward steadily. And I will, whenever it becomes viable, have all my stories at AO3, because I believe it is the future of fandom and a place where all the little Venn circles can overlap.

I'll happily accept an invite when it's available too. I hope my phrasing didn't make me sound unhappy with AO3's progress, because I've been nothing but impressed by the speed with which OTW has been moving forward on all fronts, especially the archive. It's just sometimes, you've got to do something in the interim.

Oh, absolutely! I just wanted to make sure you knew we are making progress. :) We're as eager to get moved over to our new servers and into open beta as everyone else, and incredibly excited now that it's so close. Assuming I haven't just jinxed us, of course....

If this is just to tide you over until AO3, then why not use the free google sites? I have my resume up there and it's super easy to use and update.

My website is hosted by Slashcity, and I've been very, very happy there. I know some people have had issues with its owners, but they've always treated me wonderfully; I can't say enough good things about them.

You know, I was going to ask you about Slashcity. I checked out their home page and was a little disturbed that it looked like it hadn't been updated since about 2004. Either that argues for a lack of problems or a deep disinterest in upkeep. The price is certainly right.

I sort of hate the google sites - they're more and more unfriendly to a dial up user.

It's for more than a tide over, since even when AO3 is live and I can archive there, I'd like my own separate spot.

I've been with the slashcity people for years -- my gosh, it must be going on ten now. I've never had any issues in all that time. And as you say, the price is right.

I should email you. In fact, I think I will!
