Jared’s eyes were open but he was unseeing and he was unresponsive. It was just like he was back in the coma, but Jared’s doctors assured the three worried men that he was in fact awake. Chris had sat beside Jared and carefully explained to his lover that their baby was alive but not doing as well as they had hoped, and as soon as the words left his mouth, Chris could see Jared shut down. He had been like that for the past three days since waking, he hadn’t eaten yet and was put on another drip for minerals and nutrients, and talk was also going on about moving the young man to the psychiatric ward for proper treatment and therapy.

Chris however, wouldn’t allow it. He stood by his partner’s side, defending the man who couldn’t defend himself. Chris would talk to Jared about everything and nothing, trying to coax the younger man out of his daze. However it seemed as if nothing was working, it seemed as if nothing anyone said to the young man was sinking in and hope was slowly fading.

“Chris, leave me with Jared, you need a break, go get a proper meal and use the hospital shower, we brought you some fresh clothes,” Jensen urged, rousing Chris from his thoughts, trying to move the older man from his spot by Jared’s side.

“No, I can’t. I can’t just leave him here,” Chris refused, he had barely left Jared’s side in the past three days, not even the doctors or nurses could move him.

“Too bad, you aren’t helping Jared by harming yourself. How can you expect to look after Jared if you can’t even look after yourself? Now go,” Jensen ordered pushing Chris out of the room forcibly, “I don’t want to see you back here for at least half an hour okay?” Jensen ordered.

“Fine,” Chris called from outside the door, his hand resting against the hard wooden door for a moment longer before walking away, he’d be back in 29 minutes.

Jensen slumped down in the recently vacated chair, grabbing Jared’s large hand in his own before starting his own conversation with Jared. “I know you can hear me Jay, and whatever’s going on in that freaky head of yours, it has to stop. You’re killing Chris, and I don’t want to guilt ya or anything, but that man is at his wits end. He needs you to be okay, he needs you,” Jensen sighed.

Jared didn’t respond.

“Just come back to us Jay, do it for Chris, do it for that little girl. Did you know no one has seen her yet? Chris says that you have to be the first...” Jensen started, his thoughts however rushing ahead of him. Jensen’s eyes widened, he had an idea, now he just had to see if he could put that idea into practise.

Jensen sat alone with Jared for exactly 26 minutes before Chris returned with Steve in tow. Chris stormed into the room, finally wearing clean clothes, and immediately rushed up to Jared’s side.

“Any change?” he asked, not even bothering with saying ‘hello’.

“No,” Jensen said regretfully, moving out of Chris’ way so that the older man could sit down beside Jared.

“Hey Jay, where are ya? Huh? You ready to come back?” Chris asked, ignoring the other two men in the room, his hand carding through Jared’s long and greasy hair.

Jared just lay still. Completely unaware of Chris or anyone else in the room.

“Chris? I have an idea, to help Jared,” Jensen started.

“Yeah?” Chris asked without turning away from Jared, his lips brushing over Jared’s in greeting.

“Yeah. We’d have to work it out with the doctors, but maybe if we could move Jared to see the little one? Maybe that would help?” Jensen hesitated.

“Do you think we could?” Chris asked, hopeful, finally turning to face Jensen for the first time.

“At this stage all we can do at this stage, I guess,” Jensen shrugged.

“Sounds like a good idea, want me to call a doc in?” Steve asked.

“Yeah, yes please,” Chris nodded. “Hear that Jay? Let’s see if we can get you to see our little baby, maybe if you see her you can come back to us?” Chris asked talking to Jared again.

The doctor came in not long after, checking Jared over before finally facing Chris and prompting the man for further explanation on why she was called.

“I was wondering if we could move Jared? Maybe so he was with the baby?” Chris asked hesitantly.

The small doctor looked at Chris, her eyes evaluating and calculating, there was a stagnant pause before she finally spoke; “I think we could work something out, the baby isn’t stable enough to move, but I think if we got Jared into a wheelchair, maybe we could work it. He isn’t actually in a coma or has anything we can identify as being wrong with him. I’m willing to try your idea, but if it doesn’t work then I think we have to start looking into other possibilities for treatment. Okay?” she compromised.

“Sure, yes please. I’ll take anything I can get right now,” Chris quickly accepted.

“Okay, I’ll come back later on and we can work on getting him ready to be moved,” the doctor nodded before leaving the room.

Chris sighed and collapsed back into the hard plastic chair, his body crumbling in on itself and his breaths coming out in short bursts.

“Chris? Man are you okay?” Steve asked, both he and Jensen rushing up to their friend.

“Yeah. I just... fuck. I’m going to be seeing my baby girl, for the first time she was born. I just... I don’t know if I can do this. I need Jared,” Chris admitted. The man hated showing any signs of weakness, but in front of his two best friends, there was no way around it.

“You’ll be okay, and Jared will be there with you. If you need, so can we...” Jensen offered.

“No, I think this needs to be something we do for ourselves first. Just... just don’t go too far,” Chris asked in a whisper.

“Never,” Steve agreed.

“We’ll leave you alone for now, we’ll be in the cafeteria or something...” Jensen said walking up behind Chris and placing a hand on his shoulder giving it a gentle squeeze.

“Thanks guys...” Chris smiled before looking back at his lost lover.

Chris sat by his boyfriend’s side in silence for what seemed like hours. Usually Chris would be talking up a storm, trying to lure Jared out of his self-induced comatose state, but this time his own mind was running rapid. Jensen’s idea could either fix Jared or destroy him.

Two male orderlies and Dr Slade returned about half an hour after the initial consultation, a wheelchair in tow, ready to carefully transport Jared. The two orderlies moved to lift Jared up, but Chris cut in front of them, sliding his arms under Jared and carefully hefting Jared’s body up against his own.

“I got him,” Chris muttered, only allowing the male nurses to move the wiring and tubes out of the way as he carefully transferred Jared into the chair as carefully as he could. Chris moved as slowly but efficiently as he could, mindful of the fact that Jared had just had come out of major abdominal surgery.

“I’ve got ya, shh its okay Jay, I’ve got ya,” Chris whispered reassuringly into Jared’s ear. The younger man hadn’t shown any obvious signs of unease or distress at the move, but Chris was rewarded for his efforts when Jared slowly lifted his own arms up to rest around Chris’ shoulders, his head burying into the crook of his neck.

Chris carefully placed Jared back down onto the proffered wheelchair before crouching down in front of his lover. He tried to make eye contact with Jared’s distance gaze but gave up after a few moments of nothing but the blank stare being returned. Sighing Chris stood and walked around to the back of the wheelchair, gripping the rubbed handles, he released the chair’s breaks and started pushing Jared along, hastily grabbing at the crumpled paper bag on Jared’s bedside before leaving the room.

It was time to meet their daughter for the first time.
