hug me into heaven

You pass him and his hand flicks out and you’re really not consciously aware of it anymore as you step into the comforting familiarity of his embrace. His arms enfold you and this must be what a child feels like in the arms of his mother, warm and wanted and loved. After everything, no matter the occasion or reason or tear-streak-down-your-cheek, you finally feel like you’re someplace you belong.

Your arms-this you weren’t aware of-have missed him. They slide into that groove of his waist, meet securely behind his back and bring him closer closer closer until you’re pressed against him and he’s pressed against you and all you can smell is that intoxicating cologne and all you can feel is how soft his shirt is against your cheek and how his chin is nestling in your hair.

He rocks you, gently, back and forth until it’s almost like a dance and you look up at him and he looks down at you and you both smile because this is comfortable and this is how things are between you, pushing what could have been and what won’t be.

His arms release you at the perfect moment, nothing too short and nothing too long (and yet, somehow, it’s still not quite long enough). He smiles at you, that charming smile, poise and elegance and underlying mischief, and you don’t need to be in his arms to remember this feeling.

He walks away and you walk away and his scent lingers on your clothes long after he’s gone. His body leaves a warm imprint on yours. Your heart, you suddenly notice, feels light, light, float away on a breeze.

His arms around you, your ear to his heart, his chin home in your hair…

You’d almost feel like his lover, if this was what being his lover felt like.
