How was Don Carlos? A world premiere? But the original version was already played in 1867, right? I have Abbado's recording of the 1886 French version, and I like it (it's rather "heavy", though). I also have an Italian version (Karajan, with Carreras).

I found both Votan as well as Wotan. but you're right, it's mostly spelled with a "W". Don Carlos was great (see my recent entry). The problem at the premiere 1867 was that the opera was too long. Those days operas started at 7pm. People from the outscurts of paris had to catch the last trein home. 5 hours would have been too long so verdi had to make cuts. The version that is no played in Vienna has never been performed before.
I agree that Wotan's role requires a more villainly sound! And I couldn't agree with you more that Jukka Rasilainen should not sing this big role as often as he does. The critics won't spare you, even though you may be tremedous in ALL other roles. That leaves me to wonder why he takes on this role with such frightening frequency these past 5 or 6 years? Certainly there should be others around that are more 'competent' to this role? Like John Treleaven's to Siegfried? Or that the operatic world is still awaiting a 'OK' version of Wotan? I guess Rasilainen's compatriot Juhha Uusitalo may take on the role with much more ease than Jukka himself.
