Knitting and various other things

Okay, first the reason I am posting is because I have decided that I want to learn to knit and I know I have several friends on my f-list who are knitters, and I have some questions.

-how hard is it to learn (think back to when you first started trying to knit)
-how much does it cost (the needles, the yarn?, anything else
-what would I need to get ( Read more... )

I don't think I've ever done a friends cut. Comes from being a pack-rat, I suppose.

In regards to the knitting questions:

1) Dead easy. It looks complicated, but it's really all logic and stuff, just knots in the right places. Google or a good library book can teach you. I learned from my mum, who learned by picking up a book just so she could teach me, and then promptly forgot it. Most of what I know, really, I've learned from books and the internet.

2) Here we get to the tricky part. Needles aren't too dear, the only problem is that you have to get so many eventually; different sizes for all the different projects, and maybe circulars or DPNs, etc etc ( ... )

It's looking like I'm definitely going to try it.

I have been wanting to for a while, though if I am being honest at this point it's also a little about trying to shave some money off my Christmas budget by maybe making gifts for my mom and sister and possibly for my mother in law nad sister in law - depending on whether they end up looking like crap or not.

Everytime I go to walmart or at least up until they took out most of the craft stuff from the one by my house, I would look at the yarns and the needles and think about picking some up, but I never know how to get started.

Knittingknots is coming for animefest, and has offered to bring some stuff so I'll be able to try it out.

Taught myself basic knitting when i was 9...with a little help on the caston.

In other words, it's not too difficult at all.

I recommend, to start, a moderately large size wooden or bamboo needle, at least an american size 7. One of the problems new knitters have is until they are comfy with the yarn, it tends to slip off the needle.

As for yarns: Acrylics are fairly cheap. Superwashed wool handles easier, won't shrink, but gets pricy.

Once you get the hang of the only 2 basic stitches, scarves become very, very do-able.

I can bring some stuff with me if you wanna play during the Amimefest time...

Okay, so I went to watch some videos on knitting and now I really want to try it. I was even browing craft sites to look at different types or yarn and found some really nice needle sets.

It makes me want to start asking all sorts of questions to be prepared for when you come, since I tend to learn something better if I can see it done in person as opposed to in a video, especially since the video can't tell me when I mess up :)

You may have jusy bought yourself quite the pestering new knitter...lol

Seriously, I got into latch hook when I was like 10 and went crazy over it. I could sit for hours and hours making little rugs and stuff...

I get a little obsessed, in case you didn't already realize that XD

I think you'll be surprised at how easy knitting is. It's been too long since I knit or crocheted anything for me to say anything about costs, but I do think it's something you'd enjoy. There's just something very cool about watching the yarn grow into a piece you can wear.

People can trim their views by using the custom groups and default rather than cutting someone out entirely. I suspect you're not cut because people like you and are interested in what you have to say.

I've been meaning to try it for a while but haven't gotten around to it just yet.

I almost said something about also suspecting that many of my mutual friends have it so that they aren't watching me on their friends pages, but I didn't. I sometimes think I am the only one who reads every entry from everyone on my friends list. I had to go back like 200 entried one time - I just usually don't comment unless I think I have something to say of value.

And thanks :)

I've found it's easier to go to each friend's journal and catch up from there than try and go back using my own journal. I keep getting lost otherwise.

I guess if I've been cut, I haven't noticed. I still have some who watch me even though the manga is over. Though some of them I think only had LJ to keep up with the manga updates and probably don't come around much any more. And then there are one or two I seriously wonder why they watch me - at least one is more like a stalker than anything.

It's been years, but I remember my grandmother teaching me to crochet. I did mostly scarves and hats - and it seemed like I didn't know when to end the scarves because they'd end up longer than I am tall! I never did learn to knit, though. You'll have to get knittingknots to work with you some when she's here.

And I'm looking forward to AnimeFest, too. It should be a fun weekend.
