in my free expression class today, we watched the first part of berkley in the sixties- the part about how it all started with the free speech movement. this was super exciting for me to watch, by the way. afterward, my teacher asked us if we felt like we were able to speak as freely as we wanted to on campus. and while i was pondering this over- ( Read more... )

I don't know I think that a part of it is that most people just don't have a lot to say. Then there is the fact that there aren't many outlets to speek through. So then it becomes a matter of not having a voice rather than having one taken away. Personally, I've been considering submitting somethings to the literary magazine, but I'm conflicted because I don't really feel that that venue would represent my work. So, you have marginalized (by those making them not neccisarily those funding or censoring them)publications trying to cater to a somewhat thoughtless uncaring readership and its no suprize that the end result is less that stellar. But as far as actually speeking I feel more suppressed by the students rather than the adimistration here. I mean, there is no lack of poster for anything from band fliers to jesus meetings all over campus, and there is constantly someone trying to hand me something on the knoll be it the smelly hippy trying to get me to buy a bracelt to SEA getting me to vote for something that could possibly make ( ... )

of course it's easier to speak out when you feel like there's people who'll listen, and not only listen, but stand behind you to support you. having a disinterested or idealogically opposing audience is mentally opressing.

that's why utilizing free speech in a confident and vocal manner is absolutely neccessary. even if you believe no one's listening, or no one cares, it's all the more important to make your voice heard, especially if it's something they need to hear. you'll never know how many people will listen if you don't say anything at all.
