[Tonks has been such a slacker lately. The most magic she's done in the past couple of weeks has been to change her hair color, and that doesn't even really count for her. She's an Auror, she needs to stay in practice

[Someone's spying.

Well, kind of. Originally, he was looking for any clues of his missing employer and had just approached the barracks on the off-chance. But now, he stands mesmerized.

His jaw is slack.]

[Yeah, it doesn't take long before she realizes she's being watched. Trained Auror and all that. Still, she doesn't give any indication she knows, not just yet. Bright yellow flames shoot up about ten feet in the air, before she puts the whole thing out with another wave of her wand.

Then, and only then, does she turn to the young man who calls himself Merlin but apparently won't do any magic.]

Oh come on, I bet you could do much better than that, even at your age.

[He watches the wand; after all, he's intensely interested in how these things work.]

This place--[he begins with a shake of his head, walking closer]--I can't do the same things, here. I've tried.

Magic does seem diminished around here. Back home, the same amount of effort would've taken out almost an entire city block.

[She glances at her wand contemplatively, twirling it a bit between her fingers.]

Even things that are completely natural for me are more difficult to do, just because they're magic.

[Snape has absolutely no reason to be out and about today, but out and about he is. In the barracks, no less. Mostly to see what's there.

[And he finds someone he really didn't want to run into. He keeps quiet for now, though, wand out and ready. Having no idea how someone will react to your presence never bodes well.]

[Oh Snape, so good at lurking! And brooding. And being bat-like. Still, Tonks will realize you're there soon.

And then she turns, wand at the ready, but maybe not quite as on-edge as she was on, say, Halloween.]

We all have too much time on our hands. If I had a proper dueling partner, I'd at least be able to keep up with my training. But the resources here are limited.

[Terra enters the barracks, ready for a workout as well. She sheds her winter gear and begins stretching, though pauses to watch Tonks at work. The multi-colored flames get her attention and it's hard to look away.]

[She makes all the flames go bright fuchsia, before waving them all away.]

Am I being too distracting? I do that sometimes.

[Terra shakes her head, a small smile forming.]

It's all right, I was just warming up anyway. I thought they were pretty.

I agree! Have a favorite? [She readies her wand!]

[Kazuma is out at the barracks abusing one of the training dummies. He stops to watch her for awhile, clearly interested in what she's doing, before approaching.]

That's magic, right?

[Well, hello Captain Obvious. In his defense, they don't really have magic where he's from, so he's just trying to verify what he's seeing.]

[She gives him a slightly worried look, because of course it's magic. But she won't say it that way.]

That's right!

[Another wave of her wand and the flames disappear, leaving a totally intact dummy, as though nothing had ever touched it.]

[He nods.] Thought so. Heard there were people here that used magic, but hadn't run into any of 'em yet--not that I know of, anyways. We don't really have nothing quite like that where I'm from.

[OOC: Question! Curious Kazuma is curious and would love to ask Tonks to spar with him a bit so he can see how his Alter stands up against magic. He's extremely strong-willed and in-canon can work his way through illusions and things like that, so my question is, would that sort of resistance be of any use against Tonks' magic? For example, if she used a petrify spell (or whatever it's called), would he be able to break out of it after a bit, or would he just be stuck? Either way, he'll probably ask her, but I wanted an idea of how he'd stand up against her first as I have only a passing familiarity with HP canon.]

You probably have, and just haven't noticed. There are quite a few of us around.

[OOC: There are a *few* spells that can be resisted, the only one that's explicitly mentioned in canon is the Imperius curse - mind control - and I would venture to say a few other spells, like memory modification charms, can be resisted if the will is strong enough. Unfortunately, none of the spells Tonks would use in a fight are of that nature. The Imperius curse is illegal and she would never, ever use it. :/ So yeah anything she would use, he probably wouldn't be able to get out of.]
