SQUEEEEEEEEEEE.
This was so awesome. I did actually laugh a little - not because it was especially funny - but just because a couple of months ago we studied the Iliad in Classical Civilisation. I'd been kind of bored, and then my teacher brought up the fact that Achilles and Patroclus were thought to have been lovers.
Did my interest increase after she mentioned this? Oh yes.
Did I make a fool of myself with flailing hands and giggling? Double yes.
Did I squeal and flail and giggle when you mentioned them in here? TRIPLE YES.

Anyway. Yes. Incredibly awesome. Going to have a smile on my face for ages now! :D

What a fun coincidence! Love when stuff like that happens. I have to admit that most of what I know about the story came from the Wikipedia article I read a couple days ago. I should probably go ahead and read the original. Someday. Glad this story put a smile on your face. Comparing Sherlock and John to a pair of famous lover/warriors from Ancient Greece put a smile on my face too!

You have written something that is so rare-- that feeling when you read it, of something clicking into place, and you think: It Must Have Been So.

And, of course, I can so easily see him: small, squirmy, fevery Sherlock.

Thank you very much. Such wonderful praise. I fall in love with analogies all the time and am very pleased when I'm able to use them in a way that works for the reader. So glad this one worked for you.

Lovely! I do hope you do a future fic where Sherlock meets John for the first time and recognises him as Patroclus!

Originally I thought the last scene would be just that, the older Sherlock now understanding the significance of Achilles' loss now that he has his own Patroclus to lose. But then I decided on the "up" ending of a child having a beautiful dream of having a perfect companion who will never die before him. Can't see revisiting this--said all I know. But someone else may have an idea. That would be very cool. Thanks for the kind words.

This is so lovely. I especially love your characterization of Mummy Holmes and the family dynamics. Seems so right.

I did like the idea that Sherlock and Mycroft came from a family of bright, very independent thinkers but not outright geniuses. And adult Sherlock seems very comfortable, even loving in his way, with John and Mrs. H, so it makes sense to me that he enjoyed a close, loving family growing up. Other than that, let's just say I have a lot to draw from when writing about mothers of children that age. ;)
Thanks for the lovely comment!
