Five Things

Feb 24, 2009 08:43

Blergh. Horribly, horribly ill today. Like not "he has man flu, he's just bitching", properly ill. Hating it.
So, writing Jhereg plot docs, wasting time on the internet and napping it is.

Thought I'd give this a go. zero_pixel_coun has kindly furnished me with a list of five subjects to waffle on. Please let me know if you want me to do the same for you.

Five subjects thing. )

2. Being a lawyer.
3. Zombies.
4. Politics within LRP.
5. Something you've done, but only the once, and wouldn't do again.

I am exceptionally pleased that Mr Pratchett is to become Sir Pratchett. I have tried to explain to other people that I read his books not only for the characters, but for the philosophy and psychology, and social commentary that he hangs the story off, but there's a feeling among people who don't read him, or who haven't read the later stuff where he really gets into his stride, that he just write silly comedy. I know someone who considers him to be far sillier than Douglas Adams, and won't read him for that very reason. (Whereas I find Adams rather too silly, and can manage about a book and a half of his style before I get irritated by it.)

Can you recommend any particular books by Susannah Clarke or Marie Phillips?

Hey,

I'm thinking particularly of "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell" by Clarke and "Gods Behaving Badly" by Phillips. Clarke's written a follow-up anthology, "The Ladies of Grace Adieu," but I don't think Phillips will necessarily write in the same genre again.

1. Tattoos as spiritual experiences
2. You've been in the Jhereg even longer than me. What do you think of the changes it has gone through over the years?
3. Fatherhood
4. Western society doesn't have "rites of passage" anymore, in the way tribal cultures still do. What effect do you think this has on us?
5. Why Alianore? And why Fae?

Interesting stuff. Had to cut it short as midnight was approaching, and my darling daughter has been getting nightmares at 4.00am recently.
