Sigh. I'm with the "miss" crowd. I enjoyed maybe 20 minutes of the movie. The rest I was just waiting for it to move along. We never really got to Tolkien in this one; it was all physics-free silly shit. I will see the last, but I'm not expecting much.
As usual, Poil says it best: But we live in an age of Big, Bombastic cinema and I find it tedious.
Hee, enjoyed all your nailing of the plot holes! That gold dwarf statue really threw me when gold starting spurting from its eye. I couldn't figure out what was going on. Silly me, it's just PJ's physics-free Middle-earth!
Good point about Tauriel's healing. It's like Every Elf can do this now. I kept wondering where the 'hands of a king' would come in. Apparently Tauriel didn't need 'em.
I hope PJ makes some effort not to faff about in part 3, considering he has time to make a huge-arse battle, Smaug's death (with the pointless Dwarf thingy from ever-so-ready Dale) and then Thorin's death and Bilbo going home. I enjoyed the first film more. Have fond memories of watching it on the hospital TV after Rory was born. I'm thankful it wasn't this one!
Yes, the first one was definitely faithful to the opening of the book, and the Dwarves song was awesome, a real highpoint. So we had pointless chases in between the really good bits.
In H2, we had mostly pointless "What am I watching? A child's video game?" with very little Middle-earth feel. ME should transport you, not bore you! So you'll have to mine deep to find the good parts. Alas.
I shall hope with your hope, that when PJ has a huge battle to direct his passion to have "action", ANY action, his energies might be channeled into something more productive. Hugs to you and Rory!
