I wrote a poem today that I may or may not share later. It celebrates spring and steals lots from Rexroth, but maybe someone might like to read it. On another note I need an editor.

The new semester is off and I'm generally liking most of my classes. One in particular is quite striking, 18th Century Restoration Drama, taught by the novelist and playwright Carey Harrison. He is a wonder--humble, humorous and generous in his sharing of a story involving Allen Ginsberg. They use to share the same classroom, the very one we take ( Read more... )

I've been much to engrossed in finishing Little, Big to post anything. In coming to the end of such a beautiful work I sensed a sort of change wash over me; coming to the last words was like departing with a dear friend you had only just met, whose time together you wished could go on forever. So much to write about and so many places to go.

I saw Goran Paskaljevic's The Optimists tonight, which made me laugh as much as I have at any comedy in several years; it also reminded me that I still have to write a year end review for movies that I came across last year. I finally watched Yuri Norstein's Tale of Tales and was blown away. It's, up to this moment, the single best animated film I've come across. It shares much in common with Tarkovsky's Mirror in its exploration of memory and personal symbolism. He has said about the film, "[it is] about simple concepts that give you the strength to live." I discovered this Tolstoy parable through Kevin A. Carson's Studies in Mutualist Political Economy, that perfectly fits into my world view of the moment, and it's also beautifully poetic. It goes like this:

Oates was discussing her newly printed journals from 1973 to 1982 with the poet  Lawrence Joseph, when she commented on how often we take things for granted throughout life and that we so seldom remember the actual words our loved ones spoke to us. I was sick for most of last week, and still am a bit so I'm now just getting back up to speed with writing and recording. I did have a pretty good weekend, which consisted of a no pants subway ride, getting flaked out on by another girl and recouping at a party the next night.
