Whoa email, what just happened?

SO, I am not sure what went on with my gmail last night, but apparently someone, or someone's program/virus took it over and sent out a mass email to everyone on my friends list. I only know because gmail detected suspicious activity and froze my account until I could get a verification over my phone! All the email contained was a website address,
