new season, old tricks

i bought a very expensive radar detector: a valentine one. it should arrive tomorrow or the next day. i did a ton of research and everything seemed to indicate it's pretty much the best on the market. there seems to be no real point to owning it, since i (knock on wood) never get convicted of speeding. but i've wanted one for about two years, ( Read more... )

Women hardly ever get speeding tickets. They flash a nice smile and some cleavage and its ‘take it easy next time, ok?’

Regarding the summer of Ashlee, while self inspection and criticism can have its benefits, don’t be too hard on yourself. Its rough out there. Sometimes the best laid plans don’t work out like we’d like them too.

Now if you think you’ve decided how you failed to make the summer of Ashlee a memorable one, then all you need to do is change those habits for a better fall of Ashlee. Drink more, stay out later, and find some of the ‘right’ cloths.

PS… You could always try internet dating.

if you go that route, don't forget to bring along a translator.

what the ad says ...... what the ad means....
"a few extra pounds" - "lard-ass"
"distinguished-looking" - "wrinkled and balding"

you get the idea... =)

i do think that's why i haven't gotten any speeding tickets so far... but you never know, some day i'm going to get old and wrinkly.

i don't think the internet dating would've helped my goal at all, since it's really 'dating' and that's not what i was looking for, you know?

that's a good one.. i could make some sort of contest to see how much alcohol i can possibly consume. although that would be expensive unless i can get people to buy it for me.

A single radar detector is almost useless.
You can detect the radar, but it's also detecting you. Maybe you have a split second to slow down, and if you do it too obviously, you'll get pulled over anyway.

Much better would be a radar map -- take a bunch of people, all armed with radar detectors, GPS systems, and a net connection, together giving a realtime picture of where law enforcement coverage exists and where it doesn't. Now, that is a license to drive.

the point is supposed to be that you have a chance to slow down... and i've heard people say they work really well against regular radar, since you can detect it a mile away, but not against laser.

why don't you start a company for your radar map, then?

It's not a bad idea... I don't really have the business administration skills to start up a company, nor do I have the technological skills.

But if I were to do it, I'd basically need a programmer, and a web developer, and a database designer, and people to sign up for the site, and probably a good lawyer or two, and it could be done.

I don't know what the business model would be -- would it be in selling the devices? Would it be in selling a subscription to the map service? Would people without the devices be able to take advantage of the maps that the network of participants generates?

It's a lot of work to take from drawing board to working model, but if I knew the right people and they were all up for it, I bet we could do something. I bet we'd get shut down by a court order as soon as we got reasonably popular, though.

i think the business should be in selling the service. the receivers should be reasonably cheap, and it shouldn't be too hard to prevent people without receivers from being able to use it. i don't think they could shut you down for just detecting radar, not federally, at least. the only laws there have to do with interrupting radar or radio waves. some states could, but so far the only states that have those laws are virginia and dc. in fact, some states don't have anti-radar detector laws but they have a "no things hanging from the windshield" law, and your service would get around that.
