Chicago is a lot of fun. I used to go there at least one weekend during the summer when I lived in St. Louis. We always went for a Cubs vs Cardinals weekend. I used to sip Mai Tais (yes, they sell them at Wrigley Field... and damn are they strong) during the game and then head over to the Cubby Bear for jello shots. There were usually some truckers, a couple bikers, and a few frat boys in the mix... it's a bit blurry.

For my sober trips, there's excellent shopping. A huge Marshall Fields usually has some good deals. My favorite place to buy gargoyles and such, Toscano, is in Chicago. I still have a couple of friends there... might be able to find out about clubs and decent dive bars. There's also a Craigslist for Chicago, so you might want to ask the locals.

i would love to see a game there, but it's out of season. i wonder if they have good hockey in chicago? i have no interest in basketball...

i know the shopping's supposed to be fabulous there, but ideally i'd like to not spend too much money. although the boy is supposed to pay for the hotel and all, so i should have some freedom with funds.

waht is craigslist? i don't really know any locals in chicago, so i don't know who to ask about stuff like this.

dunno about rockabilly, but if you want to see bands, two good places are the abbey pub, http://www.abbeypub.com (note it's only an irish pub part of the time, the rest it books stuff like jackie-o motherfucker, etc.) and the double door, http://www.doubledoor.com . the abbey is probably a little better atmosphere.

there's a nice indoor conservatory, with this big rainforest room and other neat stuff, in i believe lincoln park and if i remember right it's free. great place to breathe some nice planty air the morning after filling your lungs with clubby smoke. there's also that neat museum with the mine ride, the giant castle dollhouse and a human heart you can walk through. it sounds super corny but it's actually really neat. my personal favorite is the shedd aquarium with beautiful tropical fish.
