09. Fanfiction: discuss

Love it. I love writing it when I have the time and my muse cooperates, I love reading it. I get to indulge in my non-canon ships, sometimes with much better writers than Rowling as far as style and mechanics. Love how it can be a stepping stone for new writers to learn the craft, to hone skills in plot and setting and style with familiar characters before they take off on their own original work.

I've actually been playing with fanfic since I was in elementary school, when I would create stories and sometimes stick-figure cartoons about my favorite characters in books, TV, and comics. I can remember sharing "Star Wars" fanfic with a fellow student in high school between "Empire" and "Jedi"; in hers she made Han Luke's mysterious sibling and in mine Luke and Leia teamed up for more adventure after "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" (before Lucas decided to retcon himself to force yet another bad "opposites attract" relationship upon the world). I indulged in self-inserts and RPF in a few notebooks that are probably still in the back of a file cabinet somewhere in the house.

But it was through HP fandom that I finally began writing on a consistent level, learning how to start and finish a story (although my very first attempt over on Fiction Alley is firmly in the "abandoned" category). I have favorite fics and authors that I re-read, and will try new authors on a regular basis. I try to comment or review, though I don't always remember to do it.

And if I ever actually get published myself, I will let the fanfic flow (with passwords/warnings for any adult material) and not read a single word myself. I find authors who insist that no fanfic be written in their worlds completely unrealistic: once you've published it and let it loose for the world to see, your writing is no longer completely your own. Authors should welcome fans who want to play in their sandbox, lest they become the only one left who cares about it.
