That's as good a way to say it as anything else.

A-yup, I agree, Ron should have kicked the bucket, the book would have been stronger for it. Sigh. Oh well.

I wish for a re-write, but that won't happen.

Agreed that a re-write is very unlikely to happen. "Author's definitive editions" don't tend to change the plot, only add in bits that got edited out. And if Rowling tried, by now the fic already has it covered in spades.

But it is nice to have the author quoted as shipping our ship.

Loved your reminder of her original outline and how that explained why we got such a close H/Hr relationship in the books. I only vaguely recall that. But it explains a lot.

You've mentioned other places your suspicion/fear that Rowling is doing this as a publicity exercise for a future work. Do you know anything about her putting out a new (HP) book or something?

But mostly, I'm not sure what will change. I don't expect Rowling to re-write and publish a "definitive author's edition". The printed canon is still there.

Well ... the movies came as close as they could to H/Hr *without* Rowling's blessing. Maybe the next HP redo - a cartoon/TV series must be in the works any time now, they've got to keep the HP cash cow moving - will make the jump.

At first I was thinking it was something Marauders because my husband said it was a prequel. Since then I've seen the reference to jog my memory - it's something based off the "Fantastic Beasts" book.

I'd think it more likely that in 20 years or so she'll do some kind of "annotated" edition with her notes in the margins that will bring in some of the stuff she didn't work in the first time, like Dean Thomas' background, and there she might offer some "what I should have done" thoughts.

Wouldn't it be good if this was publicity for a new book? What if she wrote something where R/Hr divorced and H/Hr happened?

Last week I wouldn't have said there was a chance in hell of that happening; Rowling had always seem so darn proud of her OBHWF, too defensive of little Ginny 'soul mate' Weasley, too arrogant about her post-publication lectures in who married whom and so forth in 'my world'.

But this week ... I think it's still a very far-fetched possibility, but I'm not saying it can't happen.

You know ... I've wondered at times why Rowling couldn't let other authors write licensed works in her HP universe. Like all those oodles of Star Trek and Star Wars books. Then I realised that it didn't matter, they'd be forced to keep to canon guidelines - no straying outside of OBHWF. My interest evaporated.

Now ... given what she's saying ... I could see her next attempt at generating more interest/money in HP being opening up to other authors ... who might even be allowed to speculate in divorce city. Hmm. Such a pity that epilogue is there, protecting 19 years of Weasley marriage.

I don't think she would re-write the last two books and change the R/Hr, H/G bit, as much as I wish she would. My only hope for this is that it brings new interest from fans to the H/hr ship, which has been silent for too long. I've been hiding in the D/Hr corner of fandon (though not so much lately) because of the lack of good H/Hr. I think I'll comb the internet tonight, see if I can find something good.

Speaking of good fics, I'm seriously behind on your fic. I'll try to catch up soon <3

Agreed that she's very unlikely to change the books. I could see her doing some kind of "annotated" edition - that's a bit of a fad right now among some SF/F authors who began writing in the late 70s/early 80s. But not for a while.

And agreed that people's interest is back. I've seen a number of Tumblr posts about people going back and reading the fanfics they used to love or even trying a bit of writing again. Feels good.

Yes, anytime you have the chance to catch up, I need to post the last couple of chapters here. The full story so far is on AO3 and FF.net and Portkey, of course.

This is proof that the fandom destroyed itself. If people hadn't been such raging beasts to each other... if people had just said "You know what? You ship A/B, but that doesn't affect me shipping X/Y so I'm going to just leave you to do your thing." then our fandom would live on ( ... )
