Reading recommendations, anyone?

I've been reading quite a lot again lately. I'm currently reading a translated book called 'Crime and Punishment' by Dostoyevsky. It seems to be from a different world to this one, as it contains several locations that clearly aren't from here, and I think it said it took place in 'Russia'. Fujiko also said that the author's name sounded Russian. I ( Read more... )

I currently have no recommendations, but what exactly is this book about?

A drop-out student murders a elderly money-lender and her half-sister, but is then consumed by guilt. Numerous things occur, but in short he eventually hands himself over to the authorities, is sentenced to pernal servitude in Siberia. It is... interesting.

I don't believe we've met before?

Yes, when you were older.

Really? I've seen a few people claiming to be countries posting on other peoples journals, but I didn't take it too seriously. Still, I suppose anything is possible.

And don't worry. I've lived through some fairly frightening experiences.

Hum. So I'm smart too?

What anything??? Really?

Oh. Well still... don't get hurt...

Yes.

On the Grand Line, yes, so it seems. I mean, I never thought it would be possible for people to appear from other worlds, but it clearly is. These events are easier for me to comprehend, as I've known about Devil Fruits, which though different also have 'magical' effects on people who eat them, for as long as I can remember.

I'll be fine Fujiko. But I appreciate your concern.

I read most things, although I don't usually enjoy romance novels. Quite frankly, their portrayal of women is sexual harassment.

Indeed. I've tried reading a few when there was nothing else at hand, but it only disgusted me. I just live with my boredom now.

Crime and Punishment. How... appropriate.

And what exactly do you mean by that?

A murderer consumed by his own guilt who eventually gets caught and brought to justice, strikes me as poetic. You?

Even more poetic - he isn't caught, he turns himself in due to his guilt. But yes, I would agree.

I see Miranda has already recommended Jules Verne. Do you have any particular interests?

Yes, it sounds quite interesting. I'll accept more or less anything at the moment. Excluding romance novels.

What do you have against romance novels?

Is it that difficult to understand? The portrayal of women in these novels is ridiculous - pathetic, weak, more or less sitting around waiting for a knight in shining armor whilst gossiping. Generally written by deluded women. Disgusting. I imagine there must be some exceptions out there, but I don't see why I should waste my time looking for them.
