37th Wheel of Fate [Action]

[Today is a fairly busy day for the thirteenth Murakumo.

It's been more than a week since her own run-in with Kusanagi - enough time that she's almost completely recovered, thanks to acuitas's healing leaving her with only the blood loss and one minor complication to deal with. Most of that time, she'd spent resting or trying to occupy herself with other ( Read more... )

[Action] | Today is a day for uncomfortable meetings with Murakumos semper_cogitans June 30 2011, 20:56:48 UTC
[When Nu swings by the library to grab those books, she might spot a certain little scientist - perhaps blearily remembered from one very uncomfortable day near the fountain - sitting at a small table in the library. Unlike the books she might be concealing the contents of, his are an eclectic mix of topics - turtle anatomy stands out, but there are also several books on general vertebrate anatomy, medical practises and even a few history texts. (He's still trying to become more familiar with other cultures.) The most interesting thing is the nanocomputer propped in the scientist's lap - a stark contrast to all the books, it's currently projecting reams of data while he occasionally consults one of the books. He's so engrossed in writing his reports that he doesn't notice the silver-haired Murakumo - but she's not quite so encumbered.

... Feel like talking to this strange person who wanted to help you so long ago, Nu?]

[Not... quite. She really just wants to find the right books and get them back to her apartment - there's something she wants to do with them, so she'd rather not waste too much time while picking them up.

ν-13 does take note of Robert's presence, however - hasn't she seen him somewhere before? But before she can linger on that question, her attention is drawn not to any of the books sitting at the table, but the nanocomputer the scientist has with him.]

...? [That's... not the kind of technology you see often in a place like this. Hopefully Robert doesn't mind having someone staring in his direction too much.]

[Well, the nanocomputer does stand out, and Robert is used to - albeit uncomfortable of - the attention it tends to bring in a public setting. But eventually he looks up. And notices Nu.

The moment he does, something like fear creeps into his expression. His last encounter with Nu was about fifteen different kinds of bad, and it was the first time he nearly died in Luceti. But... but it wasn't Nu, doing that. And even if he remembers what Giles said about what Nu was capable of... well, Giles was capable of killing too, wasn't he? So was Don. And even if Link had seemed like a nice person... well, Robert knew that looks could be very deceiving in his case. After all, Noel smiled at him too. And then she killed Giles.

... In the end, he nods anxiously in Nu's direction.]

... I-is... is... th-there something you... y-you need, Nu...?

[His anxiety doesn't bother ν-13 - not visibly, anyway. To be fair, she's focused on the nanocomputer right now, and she doesn't even do as much as glance in his direction in response to the statement. Her attention seems to be on nothing but the machine, apparently.

She'll answer after another moment passes.]

...Unidentified machine detected. [Computers exist in her world, but none of this particular type. ...You could say she's a little curious about it, if it weren't for the fact that she's still being as emotionless as always.]

[Robert relaxes slightly when he realizes Nu's attention is on his nanocomputer and not him. Her emotionless voice (comforting, generally) doesn't betray any hostility either, not that Robert could pick it up. So after a beat, he asks hesitantly:]

... A-Are... are you interested in my nanocomputer, then?

[He did want to give a public demonstration one day. What better training for it than this?]

[Once again, her answer is a little delayed. A nanocomputer, huh...?]

Search: "nanocomputer"... A computer with molecular-sized switching elements. [The definition's there, but she's still never seen one herself. Perhaps it's that fact that leads to her answer to his question.]

...Affirmative. [This time, unlike before, there's a faint but audible hint of curiosity in her voice as she speaks.]

[Of all things to relate to Nu over, it had to be a computer. But why not? It makes sense.]

W-Well... this particular nanocomputer is, er, a quantum computer as well. ... The majority of T-Terran computers are, save a few specialized optical c-computers and the like... [His gaze flicks down to the device in his lap, and he lifts it onto the table so Nu can have a better look.]

... I, er, was... was going to do a public d-demonstration of it. Eventually. But I... I understand if that would not be something you... w-would wish to attend. So... so it would be simple enough to... t-to show you at this point.

[Her gaze remains focused on the machine, but she seems to be listening, only quietly murmuring to herself once in reaction to one particular term - although this time, it's far less audible than before.]

Searching database for the definition of "quantum computer"... Search complete. Quantum computer: a computer that makes use of the quantum states of electrons or other particles to store and process information as quantum bits. [If it's both that and a nanocomputer, and this seems to be the standard for computers in his world, it must have very advanced technology... especially since this machine doesn't seem to make use of any sort of ars magus to operate.]

...Show Nu...? [She wouldn't mind a demonstration... but like he said, she wouldn't be all that inclined to attend a public demonstration. If he can do so here instead, she would probably prefer that - and the faint but audible curiosity in her tone seems to hint at just that.]

[So Nu recognizes both nano- and quantum computers. That helps, then, though it's surprising that she does. Is her world similar in terms of technology to his? Litchi had also expressed interest in his nanocomputer, and Robert knows Nu is from Litchi's multiverse. So what does that mean, exactly?]

This computer is... a-an electron-based quantum computer, yes. It uses... electron spin, to be precise.

[Robert even manages a nervous little smile as the holoprojector on his nanocomputer displays the reams of data - but he eventually brings up one of the holovideos he's taken of Luceti. Just... a three-dimensional video of part of the square. A slow, consistent panning across the horizon - it's like actually watching it, albeit suspended in what seems like the air above the computer's screen.]... And this is, er, holovideo. There is a static v-version... called holophotography ( ... )

[ν-13 doesn't say anything; not wanting to interrupt, she instead focuses on the machine... and the holovideo, once he brings it up. Her behavior is a little reminiscent of that of a child being shown something new and interesting... although with much less obvious excitement and less talking on her part. Even if he says he hasn't been able to take as high-quality imagery as he wants... this is impressive technology.

...It's a bit reminiscent of what she learned to do using Hyt's magic, only this seems to be able to record things... and due to it being technology-based rather than filial magic-based, it's obviously less exhausting to make use of, too. Hm.]

[This demeanour is mostly - but not entirely - lost on Robert. But Nu is being calm, and quiet, and respectful - and she's not trying to stick a few dozen swords in him like Yuber or Kusanagi. So he has no real complaints at the moment.]

... Does... d-does your world have... similar technology, Nu?

[He... isn't sure what kind of armour Nu has - after all, he only got the most brief look at it when he was trying to help her - but if it's computerized, it might be at least superficially similar.]

[Of course not. He's given her no reason to try to do anything of the sort, and as long as he doesn't do anything to change that, she's not really dangerous to him.]

Attempts to create similar technology have... been recorded. [Though given that her world relies so much on ars magus-based technology and canon is too vague on this, she isn't certain if such technology really was made, and if it still exists.]

Ah, well... D-Doctor Faye-Ling seemed to at least... recognize the concept herself, so... th-that would make sense.

[He nervously draws his fingers over his nanocomputer again. Talking about technology is far easier than talking about himself.] What other sorts of technology are... commonplace in your world, if... if you are aware?

...Technological standard: ars magus-based technology. [Considering that's what's used to maintain the climate of hierarchical cities, and how much the Librarium relies on it... it's what she recognizes as the standard, at least.]

Ars magus...? [Robert thinks he recognizes this from Litchi, but he's not entirely certain. Still... maybe Nu can give a better description.]

How does that... power t-technology, if I may ask?

[Action] awakenedchaos July 7 2011, 22:54:37 UTC
Search: "ars magus"... A sub-type of magic using seithr conversion.

[So in other words, it powers technology through magic that makes use of a substance that exists in her world. Not that that's the only use for it, but... well, it's what he asked about.]
