You've got a boat load of nerve

To walk away from Gainesville after getting educated here and then slandering it and the people who have stayed here after getting a degree...for whatever reason. In my instance it's because I just so happened to find work in my field which offers me benefits and paid vacation. I found it comforting to stay here instead of going somewhere ( Read more... )

what about those of us who detested gainesville while we were still living there? Are we allowed to slander it?

Im not saying that I have anything against those that live there... I have several good friends that are probably going to be in gainesville till the day they die. And I understand why they are happy there, though I would never choose it myself. Gainesville just didnt really give me what I needed, socially or educationally, and moving somewhere else turned me from a bitter, jaded, depressed person into a happy, cheerful, optimistic person. Just visiting the place depressed me at the memory that for 9 years it was my whole world. I know many that would agree with me and many that would disagree, and each has their own reasons. But I feel no obligation to give the place any props... its like telling me I should feel obligated to like a movie I didnt enjoy just because the people that made it put so much effort and love into it.

I don't care if anyone detests gainesville, I just don't expect to be looked down on for living here. I like the idea of being established somewhere. I never had that when I was younger. I lived in/around big cities, moved a lot etc, so now with this job that I really like it just feels sort of comfortable being somewhere familiar. I don't like it when others imply that gainesville isn't a good enough place to further yourself in and that you're less than someone else who moved on to bigger and better things. No, gainesville is not a big city or huge cultural center but I already experienced something like that. There are other places I'd like to live too and maybe a job opportunity or something will take me there but for right now I'm ok where I am. There's nothing wrong with me because I stayed here. I'm not afraid and need the security of a smaller town, I'm not too ignorant to want to go somewhere else, I'm not lacking intelligence and unable to support myself somewhere else etc...It's just a choice I made.

you don't think I look down on you do you? I only think that people are ridiculous that stay there for no reason whatsoever just because they had their college there and they are still acting like they are in college 10 years later and not doing a damn thing. I know quite a few people that live there that have a great life at least partially because of it: Ed and Xen among others. You have a job giving you experience so you can go on to other things when you want, either in Gville or somewhere else. I on the otherhand won't be moving back. It kind of surprises me that there is no real permanent art gallery scene there, so it would have been hard for me anyhow...

No I don't think you look down on me. Coincidentally someone took a jab at me recently about not having gone very far in life so far since i'm still here and this follows someone else I know hearing a similar comment made to them about being in Gainesville still. So the two comments were just made too close together for me to ignore it i suppose.

i can completely understand staying there to live since you found a good job there. other then that, just accept the fact that you would be a townie. since everyone who actually finishes college and doesn't look for a decent job and stays in gville -well that IS the definition of townie. shit- i live in a small town in North Carolina now because i love what i do. there's nothing that cool about north carolina besides maybe chapel hill is kinda cool. you don't have to move to a big city to find a job you like. some people find jobs there, it doesn't make their jobs any better then a good job you can find in a small city or a medium sized city. another thing you mentioned was the cost of living Vs your salary. Thats an interesting point, mostly companies pay you based on the standard of living in the area the company is in. Here in Oslo its fucking EXPENSIVE it seems like people are getting paid more here, but they are getting paid enough to survive and be comfortable...but not getting rich by any means. Again in Durham i getting paid ( ... )

Yeah i know it doesn't really make a difference in the end because salaries adjust to the area etc, I guess I just feel that my situation is better here than it could be because when I was in long beach with Flounder I saw similar jobs going for similar salaries and it sooooo much more expensive there.

So, I just took something really personally that someone implied about my life position if I'm still here. I'm probably hyper-sensitive right now because I'm just starting to feel normal again after everything I've been through the past couple of years but I'm still not completely secure.
