do you already listen to the zombies? british pop from the 60s -- look for any greatest hits/best of collection.
other albums i would recommend to you: pony up! - make love to the judges with your eyes sarge - the glass intact pulp - different class, or anything really (i'm trying to think of things you might not already listen to!)
and, not sure if you'd be into this but some songs from johnny cash's later american recordings albums (his cover of "hurt" is probably the most well known) are amazing and full of that driving down a lonely road at night feeling.
I'm going to second the Cash vote. Guy ran the gauntlet of emotions from "I am goofy, here is a song about building a car" on One Piece at a Time (I think that's a title) to "I regret what I've done and I'm paying for it dearly" on Folsom Prison Blues. And, yeah, his cover of "Hurt" is I dare say more heartfelt.
God, I haven't bought a new album in a while. You probably already have these albums, but I'll give it a shot: Sonic Nurse by Sonic Youth ("Unmade Bed," especially, seems to be bouncing around in my head a lot) The New Romance by Pretty Girls Make Graves ("A Certain Cemetery" is nice as are "All Medicated Geniuses" and "The Teeth Collector")
And perhaps on a completely different note (i.e. a faster groove) there's Death From Above 1979's "You're a Woman I'm A Machine" off of which "Black History Month" comes. I like the pained reminiscing the lyrics seem to have: Can you remember a time when this city was A great place for architects and debutantes A nice place for midwives and crossing guards And on, and on...
Hold on children Your mother and father are leaving)
"Blood On Our Hands" also has a nice "I'll never forget, grr!" feel to it: There is blood on our hands again From the bedroom is where we will bring it back to the start again bring it back to the love we had
Hmm... off the top of my head are: (tracks in quotes)
Common Prince - Musicology (album's great!) The Infadels - "Love Like Semtex" Chris Coco - "Falling" Ak'Sent - "Bounce" Curumin - "Guerreiro" Timo Maas - "Unite" Air Jaco Pastorious

if you've seen Music and Lyrics, you'd know that the movie soundtrack is full of wonderful cheesy pop, you might want to give that a try.
there's also Jason Mraz's "The Beauty in Ugly" :)
