Surprisingly, it was just one year ago that we had our ridiculous trip to the coast. Time has flown since then!

I don't know when I'll next be out that way...I'd like to take a trip sometime this summer, but I think it may be going a bit more international. What about you? When are you going to come back out West?

Hey there stranger,

I came to ask a question about Japanese that has been put to me by a professor who's studying Filipina hostesses in Japan. Is "okama" an offensive term? As in, do (some?) queer folks in Japan take offense? Is so, what's the story on that?

When I saw her question, I thought you might be the most reliable source that I know of.

And also, I see that you're at the University of Denver since 2005--is this for teacher certification? What are you up to these days?

To tell you the truth, I don't really have an answer to the 'okama' question. Most of my forays into queer Japan were done in English and we didn't really talk about terminology all that much.

As for your second question, I am indeed teaching. I went through an alternative licensure program, got a masters in Educational Psychology and then found a job teaching at a school about as diametrically opposed to the Japanese system as possible--all about student-centered learning, exploration and giving children choices. I taught a mixed-age kindergarten/1st/2nd grade class for two years and loved it.

My boyfriend got into a MFA program in Dance at C.U. and we moved to Boulder just a couple of weeks ago. I've secured a new job teaching second and third grade at a school that is very similar to the one I left. Now I'm on summer vacation, unpacking, planting vegetables and being outside as much as possible.

How about yourself? Still up to your eyeballs in academia?

your life is turning out almost exactly as you planned--you as an elementary school teacher supporting an artist boyfriend! sounds sweet. i am indeed still caught up in academia. i just finished my third year, am applying for fellowships, plan to go to Japan for two months this summer, take my qualifying exams next winter and head out to Japan for a year or two of research next summer. in the meantime, i am hanging out in SF with Kyle and all is good. if you ever make it out this way, or to Japan again, do let me know.
