InterLibrary Loan? I think LA is pretty strapped for cash so there might be a fee, though. :(

Do you know about worldcat? Search all the libraries at once.

BURN THEM! BURN THEM ALL!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHHAAAAA!!!!

...Or, you know, interlibrary loan. Ask a librarian. If you want to do the boring, non-burny thing.

Which books don't they have?

Most public libraries try to maintain Inter-Library Loan(s) with a zero fee. I've only seen one patron ever have to pay for anything that came in through ILL and that was from a private institution (the patron expected and was willing to pay the fee). If you already have a library account, you can set up your own ILL account online at WorldCat. First-time registration is a bit of a pain and requires personal information, but once you've done that then it's pretty easy. I've walked countless people through the set-up, so if you have questions, please feel free to ask me. :)

You don't have to do the whole WorldCat thing, since LAPL is part of MCLS - the Metropolitan Cooperative Library System. A librarian at any LA library can help you get something through MCLS. (We used to use it all the time back at my old library.)
