Good To Know

As I halfway knew it would, registering for a class at Harvard's extension school involved retrieving information from whatever sort of records were created back in 2004 when I was dithering job-wise and bored enough to take a grad school class for fun. You can get a Master's in Linguistics at the extension school, and I totally thought in 2004 ( Read more... )

I have a lot of fun programming Java in Processing.org.

If you like making little toys and artsy things, it might be the platform for you! It's its own little editor, and has a library of basic graphic and mouse reading type stuff.

My last comment got marked as spam?

Odd.

Google for processing -- it is a crazy fun way to sharpen up Java skills and get practice making by making toys and art.

Weird - I got the email like it wasn't no thing.

The syllabus makes a HUGE DEAL about not using resources outside of what's provided via the course (basically to protect against unintentional academic dishonesty) but I'm hoping this is something I can build on after the semester's over, so will keep this in mind for later.

Hmm, not sure what they are getting at with "resources".
(though in the real world, half of all problems are solved by googling for previously asked questions at stack overflow)

In any case, it is a fun little editor and library for making toys and games and art and is a great way to parlay a little bit of knowledge of Java into one of those things. I don't think it would be much help on a specific programming assignment, tho

I worked with some brogrammers at my first job in LA. Oddly enough I didn't really fit in there. The one guy I became friends with was decidedly non-brogrammerly (he was a founding member of Negativland if that gives you an idea of his pedigree).

I'm really curious to hear how you take to programming. These days so much involves googling or searching Stack Overflow for answers rather than puzzling things out on your own. More efficient but less satisfying.

I once accidentally bossed around the guy who teaches that course.

Not like "Oooh, I shouldn't have told THAT GUY what to do!" more like "Oooh, I told you what to do? I didn't realize I did that!"
