If wedding were bright joyous occasions then parting from one’s family was the exact opposite. The carriages were being made ready for the long journey back to the eastern lands. The trip was going to last a week so they were ensuring that the company had enough food and drink supply that could last them their entire journey. Many people had come down to bid Jaejoong goodbye. His sisters and mother were already tearing by the time he stepped out of the house. Although it had almost become a routine everytime each sister was married off but this was their little Jaejoong getting married, they only little brother and son. Not to mention, his future home was going to be further than any member of their family had ever travelled.
“We’re going to miss you, Joongie,” Ara hugged her brother close. “But we promise to visit soon!”
“Of course, our home will be most welcoming towards your family.” Mr. Jung added albeit feeling a little awkward in midst of family parting from each other.
After a few more painful goodbyes, especially with the way Jaejoong was still clinging onto his mother and sisters, they finally stepped into their respective carriages to begin their long journey. Of course, Yunho and Jaejoong had their own newlywed couple carriage while Changmin and Mr. Jung travelled in the one in front. The other carriages for the relatives who had come from the eastern lands to celebrate the union of the two were lined up behind.

“I’m going to miss this place so much.” Jaejoong said dully as he looked out of the carriage’s window, watching the familiar houses pass by. Who knew when would be the next time he will get to visit his hometown, the place he had grown up all the while, making lifelong friends amongst the town’s children. They had already passed by Siwon’s house, stopping there for a while upon Jaejoong’s vehement demand to say goodbye to his best friend before leaving. He remembered passing by the smithy, remorseful that Dongwook and he had not parted on good terms especially since that man had occupied most of his thoughts ever since he had hit puberty. However, he was glad that it was just a mere infatuation with man for his true love was sitting next to him. Then he remembered passing by pretty Yoobin’s house, the little girl who he had offered to babysit once in a while. He was going to miss this place dearly.
“Don’t dwell on such awful thoughts, love. I promise we will visit your hometown soon enough. Until then, I’m very excited for you to meet my cousins and friends back home. I’m sure you’ll take a liking towards them.” Yunho tried to cheer Jaejoong’ sullen mood up. Obviously Yunho couldn’t relate to Jaejoong. After all, he had never parted from his family for so long and also never been so far away from them. Jaejoong was only 18 as he went through such a life changing experience. However, he promised to make life happier for Jaejoong from that point onwards.
“Do you wish to hear some stories about my friends and family at home?” Yunho asked, watching as Jaejoong’s eyes brightened up at the thought of hearing exciting and hilarious stories from Yunho. As for Yunho, he was glad he could figure out a way to draw Jaejoong away from his miserable thoughts. Not only that, he was hoping that through his little stories, Jaejoong would unknowingly gain familiarity with the people he was going to meet a week from now.
“Okay, how about the one where my cousin, Yoochun…I have told you about him haven’t I? Yes, well, about the time he almost…”

It was their 4th day traveling; almost half of the journey was complete. It was not only the distance that made the journey long but all the stops they had to make now and then. Sometimes the rain would make the ground too muddy to travel, they had to stay at inns at nights as traveling at night would prove to be dangerous and of course, the detours through different towns they had to make.
Jaejoong was fast asleep on Yunho’s shoulder as the company decided to make a stop at the next available inn for the night. However, there was not a sight of life for next mile or so. However within 2 hours, they finally spotted a nearby town and decided to take a break there.
They arrived at an inn and were soon assigned rooms. Yunho and Jaejoong went to their room which was nothing more than a creaky bed but that had to do for the night.
“Yun…I need to use the washroom.” Jaejoong mumbled, after they were settled into bed.
“Hmm…?” Yunho had been fast asleep the moment his head had hit the pillow. The journey was tiring everyone out.
“I need to use the washroom.” Jaejoong whispered again, knowing how thin the room’s walls were.
“I think I saw one at the end of the hallway.” Yunho grumbled half asleep. “Do you want me to accompany you?”
“No, it’s fine, I’ll find my way.” Jaejoong said as he got off the best and slipped on his travelling boots which looked odd against his loose night dress. He didn’t want to disturb Yunho more than he already had. For Jaejoong, he could doze on and off any time as they travelled but Yunho had to be alert at all times, making sure they were on the right path and nothing posed as a danger to the company.
Taking a candle holder in one hand, Jaejoong made his through the long-winded and the dim-lighted corridors of the inn. It was really breezy along the corridors, causing his night dress to dance around him. Good for him, he had navigated himself to the washroom after a few turns here and there. However the problem only came once he came out of the washroom and a strong gust of wind had blown his candle off, leaving him vulnerable in the dim-lighted place. If Jaejoong was good at something, it was navigating his way through places and he had to trust his skills to lead him back to his room. Cautiously he took a few steps forward, trying his best to remember where he had come from.
Jaejoong had successfully led himself half way towards his room when one of the doors along the hallway creaked open. Hope soared within Jaejoong as he hoped it was one of Yunho’s relatives and could help him find his way back to his room. However, to his utter dismay, a stranger presented himself in front of Jaejoong.
“What’s a pretty thing like you roaming the corridors so late at night?” the burly man questioned Jaejoong.
Uneasiness settled at the pit of Jaejoong’s stomach, as the man came closer. “I was wondering if you knew where room 143 is.”
“Oh I know it alright, come follow me.” The man said as he led Jaejoong the opposite way to where Jaejoong was intending to go.
Unsure if he should follow the man or not, Jaejoong stood rooted to spot. “Come on, you want to go back to your room right?”
Jaejoong nodded and hesitantly followed the man. They fell into step as the man wound his arm around Jaejoong waist, in a friendly gesture to lead Jaeoong along the corridor. However, Jaejoong felt it was too intimate and familiar for a man to act this way. Furthermore, Jaejoong began to suspect that this wasn’t the route to his room at all. The hallway was getting darker and narrower and all Jaejoong wanted to do was escape this man’s hold and run.
The man’s hand slid further behind his back, dangerously close to his rump. It was then when the man suddenly stopped and pinned Jaejoong against the corridor’s wall. He bundled Jaejoong’s wrist in one hand and pinned them above his head before he swooped down to ravage Jaejoong’s mouth.
Jaejoong wanted to scream badly but couldn’t as the disgusting man tried to shove his tongue in his mouth. The man’s other hand was riding along his thigh underneath his dress shirt when Jaejoong lost all sense before he stomped hard on the man’s foot. The man let out a loud yelp of pain. Jaejoong decided to take advantage of the man’s pained state to sock a punch at him but man had gain controlled once more and had grabbed his hand before he could even hit the man. Instead the man had angrily backhanded Jaejoong for acting violently towards him. At this, Jaejoong screamed out loud, not only because of the pain but wanting to attract any form of help.
True to his thoughts, a few doors along the corridor opened up thanks to the ridiculously thin walls and a few people came out of their rooms. The confused and irritated faces of people turned to appal and anger as they saw Jaejoong sprawled on the floor and an angry man heaving above him. One of the people being Changmin immediately ran out his room before pouncing on the man that had attacked Jaejoong.
The two broke into a fight that had attracted an even bigger crowd. Some people had tried to stop the two but the two were getting even more violent as time passed.
“Changmin! Stop this as once!” Mr. Jung loud voice boomed throughout the corridor, as he arrived at the scene of commotion.
Changmin let go of the attacker upon hearing his father’s voice, as he panted heavily through his nose. However, to the attacker, it wasn’t over yet. The man grabbed Jaejoong by his arm before turning him around and produced a knife from his pocket and placed it to Jaejoong’s throat.
“NO!” Yunho who had just arrived at the scene moments ago yelled for the man to stop and not hurt his spouse.
“Yunho…!” Jaejoong whimpered, not daring to make too much noise, afraid the knife may slip and cut him.
The man smirked at how fast he had turned the situation to favour him. When Changmin had attacked him, he was sure that he was going to be handed over to police for trying to molest the boy but now he had the boy at his mercy and his dear family was going to do anything for him.
“Don’t hurt him! Just tell us what you want.” Mr. Jung tried to bargain with the attacker.
“Hmm…let’s see, what I want?” The attacker mocked. “I want this lovely little thing.” He motioned to Jaejoong and the knife dug deeper into Jaejoong’s throat until a thin red line appeared and a trail of blood oozed out.
“Stop! You’re hurting him!” Yunho yelled horrified to see a trail of blood down Jaejoong’s throat.
“Not him! Demand anything else and we’ll give it to. Money? Clothes?” Mr. Jung continued to bargain as he worried for his son-in-law’s life.
The attacker smirked. This was turning out to be better than he thought. Not only could he threaten them not to speak of his incident so that he wouldn’t get caught, he could still get something in return.
“You!” The attacked pointed towards Mr. Jung. “I want all the cash in your wallet and you too” He then pointed at Yunho.
Mr. Jung nodded at Changmin and asked him to bring the money over.
“We’ll give you what you want. Just let Jaejoong go.” Mr. Jung said as he watched Jaejoong whimper against his attacker’s hold.
“Only when I have the money in my hand, I will let this pretty little thing go.” The man smirked and caressed Jaejoong’s thigh who screwed his eyes shut in disgust.
“Don’t touch him!” Yunho growled but the attacker just laughed in return and pressed the knife harder causing Jaejoong’s breath to hitch as more blood poured out.
Changmin came running back and handed the pouch of money to his father. Mr. Jung pulled out a wad of cash and offered it to the man.
“Another thing,” the man said. “No one hears about this! Do you understand?!”
Mr. Jung nodded as he watched the attacker remove the blade from Jaejonog’s neck but continued to hold him in place. With one hand in reach of the money, the attacker threw Jaejoong towards his family, grabbed the cash and made a dash for life.
Changmin and Yunho wanted to go after the man but seeing Jaejoong’s state, they no longer wished to leave.
Yunho took hold of Jaejoong and crushed him into a hug, pecking every part of his Jaejoong. But Jaejoong remained passive except for the tears that streaked down his cheek.
“Jaejoong, are you okay? Gosh, you’re losing too much blood.” Yunho drew back from the hug and examined the cut on Jaejoong’s throat. It looked not too deep but the blood was flowing out at fast rate.
“Hurry! We have to bandage up his cut.” Changmin said and led them to one of their relative’s room who was a doctor.
Jaejoong clutched on tight onto Yunho, fingers digging painfully into his bicep. He was starting to feel woozy with his nerves and amount of blood loss. Yunho having noticed that, scooped Jaejoong up before rushing towards the doctor’s room.
The doctor had his kit with him fortunately and started to patch up Jaejoong in no time.
“You have to keep a bandage on it for a few days and make sure you have enough rest.” The doctor had advised before they made their way back to their room.
--
Jaejoong found it hard to fall asleep after the incident as he lay wide awake in his bed without saying a word. Yunho lay next to him as he caressed Jaejoong’s tousled hair softly.
“Are you okay, love?” Yunho asked then scolded himself mentally for asking such a stupid question. Of course, he wasn’t okay.
“Forget that, it was stupid question really. Do you want to something to drink, eat perhaps?” Yunho questioned but Jaejoong shook his head.
All Jaejoong wanted was to run back home, especially to his mother, who always consoled him when he fell down or got upset. Thinking about home together with the unpleasant encounter moments ago had Jaejoong choked up with emotions. He let out a loud sob surprising Yunho, who stopped caressing his hair.
“Jaejoong….what’s wrong, love?” Yunho asked, sitting up, looking down at the fat tears rolling down Jaejoong’s cheek.
“Are you pain?” He asked but he only got a negative reply in return. “Are you scared then? Don’t worry, I won’t let those men come near you ever again!”
But all Jaejoong did was bury his face into the pillow, away from Yunho, who couldn’t seem to understand his feelings. Suddenly, Jaejoong felt so alone and scared.
“Jaejoong…” Yunho concerned voice filtered through his ears again. “I’m sorry I couldn’t be there for you. I’m so sorry. I promise from now onwards I’ll protect you from everything! Please believe me…Jaejoong. I… I love you.”
With that Yunho gathered Jaejoong into his arms and hugged him tight. “You have to believe me…” He whispered into Jaejoong’s ears.
Jaejoong sighed, allowing the tension to flow out him. He had to believe Yunho. Yunho was his husband, whom he was going to spend the rest of his life with. He had to stop acting like an immature child and keep weeping to go back home. He had to adapt and become stronger. This was his life now and he had to embrace it.
Jaejoong tightened their hug with a defeated sigh but nonetheless whispered “I love you too…” sincerely meaning the words.
He was going to become stronger and enjoy his new found life no matter what came at him. He promised that.
