Beta male, another term for the blessed ones. A gift from the Gods above. The ones that would ensure continuity of the human kind. They were the male child bearers. They were able to both sire children of a woman's or beget a man his heirs and he was one of them. It was not as if his kind were rare. They made up a healthy 25% of the population whilst the alpha males and females made up 40-35% of the population. However due to disease that plagued the females in the earlier century, beta males came to very treasured. This was one of the reasons why Kim Jaejoong was the treasure of his family.
The Kims were known to be one of the homeliest families around town. Mr. Kim Kyungsam made a living for his family as the town's local herbalist. He was well known for his wisdom, which gained him the title of being staid yet venerable. Him and his wife made a lovely couple and nurturing parents more so, successfully bringing up 8 beautiful daughters. The Kim's daughters were famous even outside the boundaries of their humble town. The words of their beauty known to many outsiders.
Proud of their well-raised children, it came as a surprise to all when Mrs. Kim expected her ninth child. After overcoming hardships of a difficult pregnancy and a long delivery, Kim Jaejoong was welcomed to the world. The little bundle of surprise and joy had effectively broken line of having one daughter after another. What more, Mrs. Kim could no longer hold onto her tears of joy when the doctor announced that the little precious Jaejoong was a beta male. This had further awed the sisters as they continued to outdo each other to get a chance to hold their baby brother.

“Kim Jaejoong! You better get down from that tree this instant, young man, unless you want me to come after you,”
Boa yelled from the backdoor, glaring at the boy up on the tree.
Jaejoong merely stuck his tongue out at his sister before climbing up even higher. Boa pinched the bridge of her nose, annoyed at her younger brother. The lengths the boy went just to annoy her.
“If you break an arm, don't come crying after me,” She warned as she turned her back towards him before making her way back into the house to resume her cooking.
Boa heaved out another sigh for the umpteenth time. Having Jaejoong around the house was like having 10 young kids running around and creating havoc. Who needed 8 daughters when 1 Jaejoong was more than enough to handle. However, a home without Jaejoong was a home without any life. One could feel the loneliness chilling their bones when the warmth of Jaejoong's presence was absent. Even with the 4 elder daughters married off, his presence ensured joviality and liveliness in the house.
“Can I help?” A voice perked up beside Boa as she yelped in surprise. The person chuckled in mirth as his sister pretended to thwack him.
“You need to be tamed, you wild animal!” Boa exclaimed but handed the spatula to the boy anyways. One moment the boy was busy being a beast and the next moment he is an angel. Boa shook her head as she lifted the lid of the pot of soup to see how it was coming along.
“I smell something delicious!” a voice rang as a head popped into the kitchen.
Ara took a lungful of the aroma that was wafting out from the food, heaving out a sigh of satisfaction. Her mouth watered at the thought of getting some of that food in her empty stomach.
“Your classes are finished already?” Boa asked as she motioned to the stack of books in Ara's arms. Ara gave affirmative nod in reply as she walked into the kitchen.
“The kids were well-behaved today so I cut them some slack,” Ara explained further about the tuition classes she gave which brought money into the house. After placing her books on a nearby table, she affectionately ruffled the cook's hair.
“Hey!” Jaejoong cried out in protest, trying to smooth back his hair. He huffed at Ara before stirring the vegetables again for good measure.
“Aw, did I upset wittle Joongie?” Ara baby-talked with pouted lips, mimicking Jaejoong's little habit.
“Don't annoy him Ara or else he would go running to umma and tell on you,”
Hyojoo joked as she also came into already packed room.
“You guys are so mean!” Jaejoong pouted, crossing his arms across his chest.
At that instant, they heard the main gate creaking open, signaling the arrival of the 5th sister in the line, who now took the duty of being the oldest since the oldest 4 were now married off. Jaejoong perked up at the sound and dashed from the kitchen to the main door.
“Yoonji-noona!” He yelled as he ran right into
Yoonji's arms. “They are being mean to me!”
“We weren't unnie, I swear!” Ara and the others had followed Jaejoong but in a calmer manner.
“Aish! You guys...” Yoonji said as she juggled with bags of herbs as well as a armful of Jaejoong. Seeing his sister holding onto the heavy bags of herbs, Jaejoong took the initiative to lessen her burden by taking them to the kitchen.
“Thanks Joogie. You're an angel,” Yoonji sighed in relief.
“Suck up!” Ara called after him.

Dinner was always a big event in the Kim household. It was probably the only time of the day when the whole family was seated and doing something together. Due to different jobs and schedules, it was difficult for the family to come together. Dinner was just an excuse to spend some quality time together.
“I'm so hungry!” Yoonji said as she watched Ara and Jaejoong set up the dinning table. Mr. Kim agreed with his daughter by nodding his head and putting his papers away.
“All set!” Ara clapped her hands together as she took a seat at the table.
They had merely taken a few bites when Mr. Kim spoke up, claiming the attention of everyone.
“Mr. Jung arrived in town just yesterday,” He said as he saw curiosity colouring his children's and wife's eyes.
“Mr. Jung as in The Mr. Jung, the owner of the eastern lands?” Jaejoong asked, wide-eyed.
“Yes, Jae, the very same Mr. Jung,” Mr. Kim smiled at his only son's apprehension.
“He was in town looking for a spouse for his eldest son,” Mr. Kim recalled, “Apparently, he heard of our household of 8 daughters and a beta-male.”
It was true indeed. The beauty of the Kim daughters and their well-groomed mannerism, allowed the daughters to find themselves in a very satisfactory marriages with wealthy and upheld young men. So, it was no surprise that a landlord such as Mr. Jung was here in a humble town to find a spouse for his son.
“Yoonji is of marriageable age. She is 23! You must certainly introduce her to Mr. Jung's son, appa!” Ara pleaded, feeling very excited.
“That's the problem, Ara. Yoonji is 23 while Mr. Jung's son, Yunho, is 22,” Mr. Kim explained, “It's mandatory that the spouse must of a younger age,”
“Then how about Ara or Boa,” Hyojoo spoke up, “They are of a suitable age, right appa?”
“You're right, Jooie,” Mr. Kim said, “I would like to introduce you, Ara, Boa or Joogie to Yunho.”
“Appa!” immediately the four sisters exclaimed, “Not Joogie! Not just yet! He is way too young!”
Despite the fact the sisters loved to tease the young boy and bullied him around, they loved him equally as much and even more so. They doted upon him and were extremely protective since he was the youngest of the household.
“Now, now, that would be up to Mr. Jung and Yunho to decide. If they prefer a beta male then so be it.” Mr. Kim said as his daughters continued frowning.
“Appa! I don't want to leave you! I am not going anywhere,” Jaejoong crossed him arms over his chest.
“Joogie, whether it is the coming days or days in the future, one day you would have to get married,” Mr. Kim concluded, putting an end to the conversation. He picked up his chopsticks and resumed eating. The rest of the family followed the suit soon enough.
Well, the Kim family could enjoy their peaceful days as long as they can because things were going to get a little...crazy around here.
