If I may have your attention, please? My name is Aziraphale. I'd like to announce that as of today, I've finished cataloguing all books that were present in the library. Everything's been ordered by category and a list of the titles is available for anyone to view. To ensure that no books are misplaced or forgotten after leaving the library, I'll ( Read more... )

Saint Valentine's Day? I don't think we have anything like that in my world. Is it a holiday like Christmas?

Oh, so you know of Christmas? Well, I suppose it is more notorious than Saint Valentine's Day, what with the presents and the abundant decorating of coniferous trees. How they managed to drag Saint Nicholas into all of this is beyond me, really. While Nicholas was indeed a generous man, his actions had virtually nothing to do with the holiday of Christmas. The Europeans, at least, had the sense to divide the two celebrations. Anyway, I must say I'm rather surprised that people from another 'world' know of a holiday that celebrates the birth of His son. I was under the impression that even if He does reign over other worlds, His son was only born in the Nazareth of my world.

[Pause, as Aziraphale realizes he's been rambling while writing. That's quite a feat.]

So to answer your question, yes. It is a holiday like Christmas.

... o-oh, I never knew Christmas was so complicated. I just thought it was a day when Santa brought presents to children in a flying sled.

A sentiment shared by most children, I assure you.

Now that I know there's a library here, I'll have to put it on my list of places to see. There's much I need to learn.

...Saint Valentine's Day? Odd and unfamiliar, but whatever keeps people happy in a place like this, I suppose.

Perusing literature is a wonderful way to pass the time in a village like this. Unless, of course, you're more fond of taking strolls through the woods. To each his own.

Happiness is something this place can really use, which is why I hope everyone will have a smashing Valentine's Day. One can't deny that there are a few disappointments, from time to time, but the overall results are usually very satisfactory.

I can't like both? I want to explore the woods more, yes, but information can be found in many places.

It's difficult to feel happy when I've just arrived and found out I'm a prisoner, and that my friends are as well...but I think I understand what you mean. I don't know if I'll celebrate it personally, but there are reasons not to succumb.

That isn't what I meant to say at all. My apologies.

You won't feel any happier if you spend your time sulking, really. The only way to improve the situation is to look on the bright side of things. Aside from that, you've got nothing to lose by participating in the celebrations.

Any time is good for me. I find myself spending all my free time in the library, these days.

That certainly sounds like an impressive cataloguing system for the library. I'm certain it will be greatly appreciated in the coming months.

Pardon my ignorance, sir, though... I'm afraid I am not accustomed with this... Saint Valentine's Day?

I do hope so. Not that I'm trying to speak ill of the previous caretaker, sir Mark, of course. The library was already in a good condition when I started working on the filing system. Things can always be improved, though.

Saint Valentine's Day's meaning has changed much throughout the years, I'm afraid. While originally a day to commemorate two Saints of the Christian church, it's taken on a more commercial route, similar to Christmas. Now, the holiday's been associated with love and expressing it. People have become quite unoriginal, sadly, relying on gifts to do the talking for them. But it's the thought behind it that counts, really.

fireandnobility February 10 2009, 21:26:14 UTC
Not at all. I know Mark quite well, and the manner in which he keeps things... is not always the most organized. I'm certain he would appreciate your hard work as well.

I see... Other worlds certainly are fascinating. My world lacks such days. We have days to commemorate the eight heroes, but not much else.

Eight heroes? That sounds intriguing. They must've accomplished something grand to earn the title of 'hero', along with a matching holiday.
