I haven't developed an opinion on that yet. I just heard it today. I think if a woman can pass the same tests as men at the same level and intensity, they oughtta be able to fight on the lines if they want to ( ... )

Someone was telling me about problems that the Israeli army was having when they used women on the front lines. In that situation, they found that when women were injured on the front lines the men would leave there posts and attempt to help the women first.

I'm not saying the same thing would happen here, but with the makeup of our military consisting majoritarily of social conservatives, a similar situation would probably develop here.

I think a woman's ability to serve depends on more than her willingness to sign up or even the physicality required to complete the tasks. The perceptions of the men in the field would be important. To have an effective co-ed force would require army men to change their perspectives of what was "women's work" which society has engrained in them over the course of their lives.

you make an interesting point, about men feeling compelled to protect women on the battlefeild. my dad always believed women shouldn't really be in the military, and he made this argument. also, if a woman becomes pregnant, obviously she is pardoned from duty. but her body belongs to the military, really, if you want to get hardcore theological. if she's serious about her duty, she wouldn't get pregnant. these are very different roles here, we are talking about. i certainly don't believe roles should be assigned. but we shouldn't toss very serious commitments around like we're playing dress up. gee, i just started a whole new discussion.
