Yes, they do, and people are going to do it regardless, whether accidental, or intentional. Why? That's human nature. Eitehr because they read about it in romance novels, or see it in movies, or who knows why.
Every guy unless he's homosexual, has had fantasies about that, they just don't either talk about it or act on it.
The real question is did they ever go for it for real.
Oohh la Drama. . But yeah, I think you are right. I mean, it could depend on how one defines being "in love", but timing does like to play tricks on people such that more than one option presents itself at once. I'm sure it's happened to most people -- some in better circumstances than others, like where they don't have to dump anybody (or worry about being rejected) to make a choice. Dumping is better than cheating though!
I've met quite a few, but then again being poly myself I likely have a tendency to seek out similarly-minded people... I dunno! I just dislike the heteronormative tendency of society to assume everyone is heterosexual, cisgendered and monogamous
