career thoughts

Now that the baby is here and happy I am starting to think about putting plans into action so that I can return to (or indeed join) the paid workforce sometime in the future. The main part of my plan is to finish my PhD by the end of the year and most likely starting with part time work at the beginning of next year. I have been pretty sure for a ( Read more... )

first thought is, don't go into the TAFE system. I've had a few too many people messed around by that system in the last few years to let anyone I care about go anywhere near it.

Second thought, you'd actually make a good teacher whether at tertiary or secondary level

third thought, there's a course (somewhere) that is designed for "design/IT" people to fast track them into teaching in schools. Sorry, I don't have the details but I suspect it was a Victorian university anyway.

ooh, interesting, is that because there is a particular demand for design/IT teachers atm?

yeah, I think so - it also applies to woodwork, electronics, auto and metalwork teachers. A lot of schools are dropping the subjects as they can't find anyone to teach them.

Just wanted to second the belief you'd make a good teacher at the tertiary/secondary level.

I keep eyeing off careers in education, and then running away because I know I wouldn't get away with only teaching English Literature to teenagers who really cared about it.

you can teach in private schools in some states with a PhD and no Dip Ed.
