3 steps to going vegetarian

Oct 08, 2009 08:22

The best advice I have found so far about converting to a vego diet has come from a booklet I got from the vegetarian society, titled 'Go Vegetarian!'. There is an article in it called 'A Simple 3 Step Way to Go Vegetarian' that says that the average family actually only eats 8 or 9 different dinners repeatedly. While our family probably has a bit ( Read more... )

It's pretty easy to replace the beef mince in your average spag bog sauce with lentils.

yeah, I reckon that would work pretty good, and I quite like lentils.

Sonia makes a pasta sauce that's really nice that uses sweet potato and capsicum.

yum, I really like sweet potato :)

do you two eat a lot of vegetarian dishes? (I recall Sonia being advised a low animal protein diet yes?)

The coeliacs at Femmeconne didn't like TVP. It has wheat in it apparently.
I *think*. I might be mis-remembering.

3) Kick-arse salads. A can of beans/lentils/legumes, a can of corn, finely chopped vegies and a great salad dressing with crusty bread.

4) Ratatouille

5) Pasta with antipasto vegies (same ingredients as the salad)

sounds pretty likely. I think it may also have an msg analogue. either way, poison!!!! :)

salads are a good idea, I make a great pear and bean salad, and I am always a fan of antipasto.

TVP is meant to be soy based. Certainly TSP (Textured Soy Protein) should be. HVP can be wheat etc. But in today's market it's important to read ingredients lists anyway.

And if you're avoiding Soy then avoid yes.

'My' Summer Chickpea Salad, for example:-) Of course, the feta is one of the things that makes it pretty amazing... but I have served it to the side for dairy avoiding folk.

I used broccoli cut into tiny pieces in a food processor in place of meat to make vegetarian chili.

mango salad with tofu :)

heavy (wheat free) bread with lemon infused olive oil and balsamic vinegar (snack like)

i loved the beans with nachos that you did (recipe?)

Moroccan chick pea salad with preserved lemon

I'd also hit Tiki up for some of her tapas like experiments that you could replicate - as i suspect with brisbane summers that they will do well as food/dinner and be fun for you and E to make :)

anything with mango is a winner for me :)

the nacho beans thing was great wasn't it--unfortunately there is no recipe, I made it up a I went along. I will try and replicate it and take note this time. What I can tell you is that I used pureed pears instead of tinned tomatoes.
