I am a "don't mess around pools/ocean" type of person. I like the water, love being on boats, but I clamp down on anything messing around, taking the little kids into the pool, etc. First time for bad behavior, they get yanked out.

I grew up near the ocean. Our parents thought nothing of letting us play alone in the woods for hours unattended, but were vigilant at the beach. Older siblings were not a substitute for an actual adult in the water with us kids.
I can't read thrillers anymore, too many of them use child murder/torture as a plot device and it's too real for me now.

If you would like to go out and do something safe and fun to take your mind off of it, let me know. :)

Today is a great day for dry activities anyway, with the beautiful cooler weather. We're saving the pool for Monday, ourselves.
