Wouldn't be hard to explain - if I only had a brain

I want my brain back, actually. Friendly neighbor here (awesome mom of two, xtian in the good way, rides her own motorcycle) posted to facebook that a friend of hers lost their 2yo son. To drowning. I understand 'triggery' now. Every time I look at Ash I tear up and tense up ( Read more... )

Since I've seen this, I've been spreading this around:

I am a "don't mess around pools/ocean" type of person. I like the water, love being on boats, but I clamp down on anything messing around, taking the little kids into the pool, etc. First time for bad behavior, they get yanked out.

And I think the reaction to these types of stories is normal [in mothers, at least]. All sorts of things can freak me out, just hearing about them.

Thank you for posting that.

I grew up near the ocean. Our parents thought nothing of letting us play alone in the woods for hours unattended, but were vigilant at the beach. Older siblings were not a substitute for an actual adult in the water with us kids.

I can't read thrillers anymore, too many of them use child murder/torture as a plot device and it's too real for me now.

My heart goes out to those parents.

Take care of yourself. I often fear for Helena, especially as active and fearless as she is, but nothing on that scale of anxiety.

If you would like to go out and do something safe and fun to take your mind off of it, let me know. :)

Sadly, these stories are all too common this time of year. I get physically ill thinking of them, both for the affected families and for my own. We've got a couple of CG-approved floaties for Mal to use at the pool, but when we do finally make a trip to the beach, he'll be in a good vest and under close surveillance. I don't recall being allowed to go in the ocean alone until I was at least 12, now that I think about it.

Today is a great day for dry activities anyway, with the beautiful cooler weather. We're saving the pool for Monday, ourselves.
