It's been a year since I've posted, so I thought it was time again.

For the moment, all I have to note that's on my mind is that, I've had two people tell me that I'm the most rational woman they know, and even though they meant it as a compliment, I'm actually greatly troubled by this.

I've come to feel like my boyfriend's presence is what keeps me grounded these days, and when I have to spend time away from him, I start feeling anxious. When I head back "home", it doesn't really feel a lot like home; I'm just kind of stranding myself for a while, waiting it out until I can go back to a place where I feel more comfortable. I haven't posted in a while because I just haven't been on LJ much lately. I've been spending a lot of time with my boyfriend, he moved last week, and I moved a month before, so I've been a bit busy. Things have been getting better, but still not ideal. I hope to have time to look through the LJ posts you have posted while I've been away.

 My brother, for whatever reason, decided to buy the entire series of Daria on DVD, so we watched some of it when he came over on Sunday. I hadn't watched the show in ages, and I was surprised to find myself reciting some of the lines along with the characters. It's remarkable how something like that can stick with you for years without you even

I was informed by the PhD program director that I will not be able to go back to school in the spring as I had hoped. The reason for this is that taking and passing the history exam is part of the conditions of my readmission and I haven't taken it. I have this uncomfortable habit of always comparing the ages of the people I encounter, trying to figure out how much younger or how much older they are than me, when they did this or accomplished that. I sometimes wonder if maybe I should forgo this admittedly unproductive exercise, but I can't help it.

I wonder how much quicker I could learn a language if I bypassed the speaking and oral comprehension aspects, and just learned to read it. Give me a book of grammatical rules, a list of basic vocabulary, a dictionary and some standard texts in the language in question, and I could learn the syntax, memorize the vocabulary, and probably be plodding ( Read more... )
