I use the National Geographic video "Guns, Germs, and Steel" part 2, Conquest when I get to Pizarro in Peru in May. There was also an article called "City of Silver" in Faces, 2005-12 that would be suitable for your year 8s. It was a bit over the heads of my sixth graders.
