No longer teaching on Maui
I uhm, quit teaching and moved to the West Coast. I have finished the first draft of one novel and started another. -
I'm alive...
Still teaching, still living Upcountry Maui, but now nearly halfway through an online grad school program. Realized when I went to get something out of my LJ that I had not posted in a very long time! -

Girl1: This is hard!
S38: When was the last time you were handed an assignment that you didn't immediately know how to do?
Girl1: I can't remember.
S38: It's good you had this assignment, then.
Boy1: You finished the challenge assignment?!?!
Boy2: Yeah.
S38: He wailed and gnashed his teeth for 15 minutes, and then he did it in five.

Just devastated to learn of the death of one of my good friends from graduate school. He was a sensitive, surfin', skjydivin', bodybuildin', bagpipe playin', motorcycle ridin' dude with a PhD and a long-distance girlfriend. He married her, they had a son, lived abroad. This morning at recess, there were four sixth graders in my room. None of them were being punished. One was playing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" on the 'ukulele. Three of them were copying the translation and transliteration of an Old Babylonian primary source we'd used in class because they thought it was interesting. Lo, gather round and hear, how to keep your students out of trouble when you have a substitute teacher. The secret, apparently, is to write them a note and sign it.

Friday when I got home, I was so tired, I couldn't even get my act together to go to bed. I finally did take a shower and remove my contacts about 11 PM and set my alarm for about 3:30.
