Sometimes I dream that I'm married to some random dude, and I wonder, why am I married to him?

Surely the Germans have come up with a word for the grief you feel at the passing of someone you only ever knew over the internet.

2011: I'm living in a one-bedroom apartment, on the edge of a small town, on a dormant volcano, on the island of Maui. I live with three cats and work too much as a 6th grade social studies teacher. I live nearly 1700' feet above sea level. I may be inconvenienced by power and water outages, but I have a full tank of gas, and I am not going anywhere. I may have to eat the ticket I bought for a whalewatching cruise tomorrow.

Seventeen years ago, I had just interviewed for a job in Huwei (who-way), Taiwan. Paul--a former archaeologist from Wimbledon--drove me in his sister-in-law's mini to the train station in Tounan (dough-naan).
