Something always brings me back to you
It never takes too long…
No matter what I say or do
I'll still feel you here 'til the moment I'm gone…
- ‘Gravity’, by Sara Bareilles
Prologue
He stood on top of the tallest Metropolis skyscraper, the wind gently lifting his dark cloak as he surveyed the city skyline, glancing up and seeing the night sky dotted with stars that sparkled like living diamonds.
It always looked better from up here. Ever since moving to the city from the farm so that he could be closer to work, he’d missed the wide open skies that he took for granted all those years back in Smallville. Of course, it wouldn’t be a problem if he could only do what was supposed to come naturally to him and take flight…
He sighed, and glanced down at his family’s insignia sprayed across his chest. He really ought to just bite the bullet and get it printed on once and for all, but there were several issues that he was still contending with that made him consider himself unworthy of a permanent symbol.
First and foremost were his failings in recent months. His heart suddenly grew heavy, as it always did when he remembered the coffin of Henry James Olsen draped lavishly with yellow flowers. Such a young life…snuffed out before he’d even had a chance to really live.
It was his fault that Jimmy was dead. He may not be solely responsible for the turn of events that had led to the young man getting stabbed, but he was the one who had sent him directly to the Watchtower apartment with Davis. And Davis had killed him. There was no getting away from that one.
Then there was the issue of his inability to fly, like every other earth-dwelling Kryptonian before him, and several others that had come after him. No matter how hard he tried to concentrate and conquer his fears, he remained unable to take wing. It was as though something…or someone…was keeping him earthbound.
Just then, he heard the soft footsteps approach him from behind, and he stiffened. Perhaps he was being a little dishonest with himself. He knew exactly what was keeping him from fully embracing his destiny.
“You shouldn’t have come here, Lex,” Clark said evenly.
“If you truly don’t have any interest in seeing me, find another rooftop,” came the smooth reply. “This is Luthorcorp Towers, Clark. I have every right to be up here, and you knew I’d come up here.”
Clark swallowed as the other man’s words hit home. Slowly he turned around and regarded the man who was destined to be his worst enemy.
The man who was also now his lover.
