Aliens and spaceships, huh? I tend to like the meatier side of it- stuff like Dune.

...Never heard of Dune? It's a classic! And kind of hard to explain, because the series is pretty long and involved. What it boils down to is a battle between two powerful Noble Houses on a planet called Arrakis.
